Ipad nav software/charts

I understand from previous posts (I think) that a nav app is necessary when using digital charts, I am Mac savvy but have only used a chart plotter todate, I now have an Ipad 3 with 3/4g and would like to make use of its portability and versatility. From other posts I have gathered that charts seem inexpensive but upgrades can prove troublesome.
Any advice would be much appreciated :confused:

Navionics app if you just want to plan and monitor position. Built in maps.
INavX if you want a proper plotter on the ipad.
 
I bought the Navionics HD charts for the Med, installed on my iPad2 in April this year. It is superb and I have had no problems. Today I installed an update that provides some more features, one of which is some additional software for £2.99 that I have read will give the iPad full plotter capability with COG, SOG, etc.

I especially like the feature that allows me to link photographs to the location where they were taken, with an icon on the chart. Useful and enjoyable when reviewing the summer past.

I have also been looking at Boat Beacon, which appears to offer useful AIS functions including both transmit and receive. Does anyone have experience of it?

Yes you require an app and charts to suit

I have used imray along with I sailor and navionics which I think use he same charts but have to be purchased for each app.

There has been a flurry of updates at the end summer this year and I think that navionics has come out best in the end

Navionics has 2 apps one for I phone and hd for iPad.

I am currently favouring navionics hd on iPad.

The usual reservations regarding use in sunlight and water protection are valid a
Ong with battery life and recharging.

Still think its a usefull addition upgrades have not been a problem .

I have used Boat Beacon over the summer. The AIS receive function works well but there are some blackspots where the ships disappear presumably because they are out of coverage of the shore receiving stations that BB (and other AIS web apps??) uses.
The transmit function works well and my wife at home has been able to follow my progress around the Moray Firth on her iPad (me transmitting on an Iphone) in real time. Obviously, the transmit app only works when in mobile coverage and does not appear on "normal" AIS screens.
One rather disconcerting feature is that some BB users do not turn the app off when they leave their boats so they appear to be doing 60kts over land!
