Brought the wife an Ipad at the weekend for her birthday and she also recentley got a hand me down iphone from our nephew, so have been busy downloading various (free) apps, and just wondered if anyone who already has one can recommend any suitable apps that may suit a boating hobby on the thames.
I have already downloaded :
AA pub and restaurant guides
Met weather app
motor boat monthly

any other suggestions?

CaskFinder is useful if you're into real ales.

Other than that I'd be interested in hearing of any apps relating to the Thames and/or boaty things.

so perhaps the second question should be what would make a good app for the thames.

Maybe one from the EA that updates with live current river conditions, lock manned times and updates?

IMHO you can forget any initiatives from the EA that would have any development cost involved. The information is readily available on websites and it is easy to place an icon on your iPhone/iPad desktop that will take you directly to any page on the internet.

There are a number of apps for the tidal Thames through London all created by individuals so you never know, maybe some app savvy forumite could oblige for the non-tidal?

Not boaty or Thames in particular but you will need a decent app for reading documents and I can thoroughly recommend Goodreader which is just £2.99
I have all the user manuals for my boat stored as pdf files or word docs on my iPad including engine workshop manuals, navgear, etc.

Ibooks is free - actually it's built in - why would you pay for something that does the same thing or does it do more?

For those of us that don't have a speedo on the boat but want to be sure we can't be shouted at, (also reads in K.P.H.).

More accurate would be that we know we are not doing wrong WHEN we get shouted at. How many times has the speedo said 3.5 and people shout "OI, SLOW DOWN- IT'S ONLY 5 KNOTS ALONG HERE!!"

The app I mentioned does report actual speed at any instant. The only reason for not running it full time is that would flatten the battery of the iphone.

I've used it to gain an understanding of what 8 k.p.h. in a boat is like and now have a very good idea. Actually up here, on the very upper Thames there is very little speeding or shouting. If there is shouting it's likely to be done by me when bank side birds are hatching / rearing chicks & drunken day trippers need to be told. It doesn't happen often.
