Having boycotted apple products forever I am going to succumb.

Inavx (only ais overlays on proper charts on a tablet)
Facetime for mate in Los Angeles who seemingly cant communicate any other way.
Garageband - cos its cool!

I know to get a 3g one for the gps before anyone says. But what I can't decide is which size. So get voting!

Mini. I have my own full size but a work Mini and it's the perfect size; a bigish chartplotter, a good on board small TV and even better size for the web and ebooks.

I have a full size one but having played with a mini, when this gives up the ghost I will go for a mini. The screen is big enough for most purposes and much easier to use one handed.

I have just bought a full size Air to replace my iPad 2 which I dropped a couple of weeks ago.

I felt a mini was too small to see comfortably

My lady captain just got an Ipad -I find it as user-friendly as a cornered rat.
Size doesn't matter I'm sure - Apple is far from intuitive - brown to the core.
I'm out.

Hmmmm 8 all. Not really helping my decision making!! Only £80 difference between the 2 rippoff price points of a 64gb 3g model. I am erring towards mini as after i put it in a case i think the full size may be a bit bulky.

Gave full size to son, got mini for me. I prefer the mini because of its convenient size.

You are obviously more generous to your kids than I am. All the money goes on the boat!!

Though I will probably be like my mother, no money when I needed it up to the age of 25, then cant stop her giving me money and am now 45 and don't need it!

And if its a mini there doesn't seem much point in getting a 3. Mini 2 seems ok amd I am now down to 379 for a 32gb 3g one which seems a tad more reasonable.

To get back to your dilemma...
I had the same problem when the mini first came out. I had an iPad2 and was torn between the air and the mini when they came out. I bought the first gen mini for the boat just to display Tucabo Tides Planner ( it was cheaper than any other decent piece of electronics for the boat) then got the mini 2 for me. I am more than happy with my decision, it's easy to carry around and the screen resolution is superb. The new mini is only different in as much that it has Touch ID and can take the Apple Sim, I think.

I have a full size Air and I would not go any smaller, wife has my old full size ipad which she uses all the time.

Ref going smaller If I want something too small to see comfortably with my reading glasses on I can always use my I phone which is too small for me to use comfortably.

Full size is good to view photos, emails etc.

I used mine for emails in earnest this year for the first time on holiday and I would not go any smaller.

I bought my Ipads from John Lewis on partly because they do VAT refunds in full for CI and most importantly because they give a two year warranty not the standard one.

I also got the hard backed case with the folding cover that makes a triangle to support the screen so it is tilted up with the magnetic front cover that puts the ipad to sleep when you close it.

I've got a large Nexus 10. The main reason was for using Marine Navigator and Visit My Harbour charts whilst at the wheel going in to new areas, although I use it nearly all the time at home now too. I also have a Kindle Fire 7" and my wife has an ipad mini. Personaly I much prefer the larger 10" screen. I suppose it depends upon how good your eyesight is. ie how old you are. For me size matters!

Im "only" 45 and do most things on my phone, like this, navionics, mx mariner, email, tv. So I think maybe a mini first! And then a full size one later in life! Luckily even though i wear glasses all the time my reading is fine! No bifocals yet!!

Most people agree on the issue that the quality of the screen for the 10" model is much better. So if you want to enjoy photo's to the best possible, go for the Air. The latest model also is much faster as the latest mini-model (next gen processor). I really like the fingerprint button as you tend to put more and more data on the system, some form of blocking access becomes useful. I really like the compactness of the mini though.

I don't. I have been using a full size iPad for a couple of years happily - with navionics charts. I recently purchased a mini with retina display, and it is perfect.

I think maybe that was the first ipad mini. I think the 2 & 3 have pretty good screens
