I've just bought an ipad the gps one, I already have the navionics iphone app this does work on the ipad but you loose loads of the quality when you blow it up so it looks like I am going to have to pay £44 for the HD ipad one. My question is does anyone do an app like this that you can actualy navigate from before I go out and buy the navionics one. When I say navigate I mean either put up a road on the screen that you steer to or put heading that you navigate to. I know you can plot a course on the navionics one but theres no way of steering to it ,this will only be a backup to paper charts and the raymaine chartplotter we have on board. It would be nice if you could get an app that did this.

I have the i-sailor app. allows course to be plotted and lets you navigate from it. gives distance to next way point, cross track error and has anchor watch facility.
also lets you zoom in right down to the pontoons in the marina,

I'm waiting for Garmin's BlueChart for iPad... It will allow wireless route transfer to the Garmin Plotters. You need to add the Garmin Wireless Network Extender (which is probably worth doing for the new Garmin Wireless Radio anyway).

The cruising yachties that have come through here this season are all using the ipad 2 with Navionic apps. and declaring they are a great piece of kit.

One local guy returning with a yacht from Greece across the Atlantic - Panama - Pacific - Oz, said the last leg from Panama across was mostly done from the ipad 2 with non HD, he was very impressed.

Just a point

A few years ago, I was using my Memory Map on a laptop as a backup to some old Raymarine RL70/RL80s.
The autopilot wasnt coping so we started using the "rolling road" to steer by.

It was useful to check the progress on the laptop so I set the course vectors on and it became easier to steer by the vectors on the laptop than the rolling roar on the RL70/80

Just a thought - look for an app with a good course vector and you can then probably use it as a good overall backup nav aid.

Hi,

I must be missing something here as I have just downloaded the Navionics charts at something like £42 and all I seem to get is the chart with no means of plotting a course or keeping a route.

All I can do is plot with two pins distances
IM not the best techie in the world but its fooled me

Thanks chrisdevonshire just put the isailor app on my ipad and bought the solent and approaches maps for £11.99 and from what i can see this app is great, looks better than the navionics one has lots detail and very easy to use, i think i will actually be able to navigate with this app, i will look forward to trying it out on the boat next week weather permiting.

Not sure if I am on the right wavelength here but if you want to see what direction you are traveling in then press the GPS triangle twice and it will show you the ships heading. worked for me all the way from Southampton to Gibraltar last week.
