IPad, Bad Elf and Navionics

Wow - you are correct. I suppose the product is really in the cash cow stage of the product cycle. I bought a few years ago at £70.

It would be more cost effective to by a second hand iPad Air 2 (WiFi +Cellular) you can get them around the £200 price point.

Even £70 sounds expensive. Pretty certain my 2 ancient Bluetooth dongles were only about £20 and they worked well either wired or Bluetooth. First fix time, update freq. and accuracy were all fine.

I agree that a newer device makes more sense if £158 really is the best price. I'd consider a cheap new Android tablet without SIM capability. I imagine an 8" or 10" model with decent GPS would be around £100. It could be used as dedicated nav. kit on the boat. Main worry for me would be migrating Navionics charts from iOS device to Android. I suspect that would entail paying again and make this option much less attractive.

Well expensive is not a precise definition £20 for Bluetooth - I had a Hillman Husky that cost less than that.;-)

You cannot migrate the licence from IOS to Android (or vice versa) so that would be an additional cost.

I thought as much about migrating the licence but just a guess. Paying £20 for a Hillman Husky sounds a lot better value than £90-£160 for a GPS. :D:D

I had an Imp, fond memories but alloy head was prone to warping. My wife's mother had the Singer Chamois coupé version with sloping rear window.

Not on an iPad. The only 2 GPS dongles that I know of that work with an iPad are the Bad Elf and the Glo.

I suppose I should have guessed as much. I have dirt cheap wired and Bluetooth GPS working on Linux, Windows 7 & 10, Android (misc. versions), Raspberry Pi and Arduino. Too much to expect Apple devices wouldn't be limited to something a lot more expensive. :D
