SEAiq is excellent, and let’s you use both proper raster charts and download google earth overlays
Look up MAIB report into the sinking of Pegety on the Humber(?)..
They were using an iPad AIS app for navigation... and failed to see the ship that ran over them because the App is displaying delayed data...
Navionics replied to call for support and reads as follows,
'After a thorough analysis of the issue concerning the information window in the App, we found that it affects only devices running on an old operating system, namely iOS 9.3.x, which does not support the correct visualization of this function’s new design.
Therefore, in order to display the information correctly, we suggest updating the iOS version (9.3.5) of your device or, if this is not possible, reinstalling the same App on another Apple device that operates on a more current iOS (10.x.x or more)'
This seemed to fall in line with my thinking on the issues, so I plumbed for a replacement iPad mini which duly arrived and after an update to iOS and an install of the Navionics App I found their advice and judgement accurate to where I now have a fully functioning AIS - Problem solved
as I said, I think the charts are richer in colour and kinder to my septuagenarian eyes. The detailed information on the charts is by far superior. Other than that the anti collision features don't exist in Navionics. I have no doubt they will catch up sooner rather than later.
I live as the crow flies 200 metres from the river, I can see the vessels that are not on the AIS charts and give Navionics their dues, are visible as AIS targets.
I fired an email off this morning to Aqua Map about the missingI targets/vessels on the charts. . So far there there has been no reply.
