iPad app to display AIS

Another for iSailor but for it to be useful you have to buy their charts. You can just have a Google overlay for free. My AIS wifi is by Weatherdock and their app allows you to overlay google maps as normal, satellite or terrain. Its only a matter of time before Navionics pulls its finger out and allows it as an In-App Purchase on their ipad charts.

Hello everyone, I have read all the posts to this thread with great interest. I have a peculiar problem unlike the system crashes which a lot of users have or are experiencing. Firstly I have an HA-102 Class B AIS coupled to an RS232 to Wi-Fi device. This is relayed wirelessly to my iPad mini and my iPhone 7.
On the iPhone 7 everything works flawlessly but on the iPad everything works well until I want to see what sort of vessel it is, a Yacht or a huge super Tanker which in essence defeats the object of AIS. I know if there is something there but to find out what it is I need to view my iPhone.

Has anyone else had this experience?

As a caveat to the original thread my home port of Blyth in Northumberland is a busy little port with up to 16 vessels in the AIS field of view, all of which can be identified without any twitching or crash failures so I feel that the problems Navionics had with the target overlay has been rectified.

Look up MAIB report into the sinking of Pegety on the Humber(?)..

They were using an iPad AIS app for navigation... and failed to see the ship that ran over them because the App is displaying delayed data...

Probably an AIS web app such as Marine Traffic and not a real time AIS feed from a VHF antenna and dedicated AIS unit, such as a Vesper. So irrelevant.

Navionics replied to call for support and reads as follows,

'After a thorough analysis of the issue concerning the information window in the App, we found that it affects only devices running on an old operating system, namely iOS 9.3.x, which does not support the correct visualization of this function’s new design.

Therefore, in order to display the information correctly, we suggest updating the iOS version (9.3.5) of your device or, if this is not possible, reinstalling the same App on another Apple device that operates on a more current iOS (10.x.x or more)'

This seemed to fall in line with my thinking on the issues, so I plumbed for a replacement iPad mini which duly arrived and after an update to iOS and an install of the Navionics App I found their advice and judgement accurate to where I now have a fully functioning AIS - Problem solved

You still need to use a modicum of common sense with a tool such as this. There is no substitute for good eye sight and practical seamanship skills.

Aqua Map provide a CPA and a TCPA with an anti-collision alarm for AIS targets

Having Navionics up and running I am now looking at Aqua Map. The charts in Aqua Map are richer and more informative but the the AIS target overlays seem to be lacking a tad with no display of moored or anchored vessels. This is defeating the whole purpose of AIS in my opinion. I need to be able to display all vessels apart from a moving target.

Secondly, the moving vessels (targets) are shown on the display as a small round red circle with the vessel name underneath it, I was hoping that was a way to change it to a shape or an arrow.

I hope to be contradicted on both points but I have gone over the entire settings like a nasty little rash and cannot find anything which allows my to show moored or anchored vessels.

Finally there appears to be very little information available about the system in general.

After that it is heads up a better system than Navionics especially with the available and very useful alarms and warning systems.

If anyone has any help or advise on the above, it would be really greatly appreciated.

Cannot see how you can change this, also not sure why you think it’s so much better than navionics, seems to have similar functions and uses the same map data, agree that some of the AIS functions differ but expect Navionics to catch up as they are seeming to do.

as I said, I think the charts are richer in colour and kinder to my septuagenarian eyes. The detailed information on the charts is by far superior. Other than that the anti collision features don't exist in Navionics. I have no doubt they will catch up sooner rather than later.

I live as the crow flies 200 metres from the river, I can see the vessels that are not on the AIS charts and give Navionics their dues, are visible as AIS targets.

I fired an email off this morning to Aqua Map about the missingI targets/vessels on the charts. . So far there there has been no reply.

A vessel could transmit via AIS its position with over a minute of delay. You should keep the app open a few minutes before being sure that the ais targets are not actually displayed. iPad can run Aqua Map and Navionics simultaneously in split screen mode. Try this setup wait a few minutes and finally make a screenshoot. This should prove if there is a problem, never heard about a missing target on Aqua Map.
