iPad and navigation

I've used an ipad for the last couple of years as our ship's plotter running Navionics but now want to add wifi AIS - I'll wait - it sounds like there needs to be bidirectional multi client solution.

I think you are miles ahead of me in the techy stakes!

(I've got no idea what a bidirectional multi client solution is..!)

Just returned my non wi-fi iPad to John Lewis Branksome Poole this afternoon. Purchased 2 months ago they returned it no quibbles and I have upgraded to the cell model ...

Happy days & good service,

Me neither I googled "suitable tech babble" :)

It means (I think) that it will send and receive and connect with more than one device. At the moment Comar and Digital yacht wifi AIS are bidirectional - which should mean that a route on the iPad can be used by an autopilot to steer a course. But no solution exists to connect these to more than one iOS device at a time. We only have iPad as plotter but want to display the AIS information on iPhone and a second iPad. That's the next development with these things and with any luck if we hold out until June there will be one. It's incredible how quickly the iPad is being recognised as a legitimate stand alone plotter.

What did I tell you !
Good for you.

Re the Navionics 'full plotter app' I can't find it in the App Store, although it's referred to in the chart description. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

PHP:
This is a gps and windex more than the likes of Cunliffe....

I dare say Saint Tom would manage to navigate with the back of an envelope and a spanner on a string if required, but in fact most of the time he's a big fan of PC charting programs with a plotter as backup :)

Using an iPad search for Navionics in the App Store and this page will come up

I have UK Holland HD

Yes I've already found this page, but a previous poster said there is an additional app priced £2.99 which adds full plotter function- the chart description also mentions this, but I can't find it??

Once you have the app, go to Menu upgrades and apps.

Then touch Route and you get this

Have you looked at the Brookhouse imux (http://www.brookhouseonline.com/imux.htm)? (when are they going to fix the URL rendering on this forum?) No experience of it but it mentions controlling the autopilot (which implies bi-directional). Doesn't explicitly say multi-client but writing a single client "tcp server" is so, err, "unusual" you wouldn't even think of it unless you knew about the digital yacht thingy. Considerably more functional as a multiplexer on the face of it than most other wifi offerings.

If you're prepared to run software on a separate nav computer and already have wifi on board, navmonpc will do multi-client but is windows only and I believe is unidirectional. The next release of OpenCPN has datastream support but you'd need to check whether your client app supports bi-directional communication over UDP as OpenCPN does not implement a tcp server. If you're prepared to run a program without a GUI on mac or linux, kplex (http://www/stripydog.com/kplex)does everything you need. I posted an example here (http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?308983-iPad-AIS/page2) a while back. (ignore the breadboard: unnecessary complication -). Might not be what someone wanting a physically robust single box solution with no mucking about with command lines is after of course.
