As a "northerner" I'm not a regular visitor to Lake Solent, maybe a handful of times per season. Yarmouth is probably my favourite location. Everyone seems so friendly, welcoming and helpful. Unfortunately, being guided towards P pontoon isn't their friendliest gesture :) That said, it's fun to sit in the cockpit and watch the constant activities around as the ferry docks. Top marks.

I’m sure that was in service in 1960s with the paddle steamers to Ryde etc. they used to wash your car down I was told so you arrived on mainland minus the salt coating.

i much prefer the lymington ferry to the southampton one as i much prefer yarmouth to cowes.

cowes if full of posh yachties who like braying and holding court in the pubs.

not much different in lymington.

both places are awash with wealthy londoners who like the sound of their own voices.

I'll allow our Yarmouth resident to answer for his town.

But, I know what you mean about Cowes, however The Island sailing club is thankfully not full of DFL's, and it's absolutely delightful.

Definitely my go to place, except for Cowes Week.

While an islander and not a member have always found the island sc staff most welcoming -it’s the club I would join if looking and the lunches are very good. As said clear avoid cowes week but otherwise a pleasant location -not certain Yarmouth is so welcoming but Lymington is fine iif you need to visit.

We berth in Yarmouth, we don't live there. Skylark had an episode with a f5-6 NE wind. P pontoon is exposed to that in the entrance. Further inside the harbour, it’s considerably better. And on the outside cans, considerably worse! I’ve seen sailing yachts roll their rails under, out there on a NE wind. Just East of the pier, the Royal Solent XOD fleet will show you how it will be. And if they’re not there, it’s cos we’ve towed them into the harbour. I leave it to your imagination why that might be.

Yarmouth Harbour has a dedicated bunch of helpful staff, who meet you in the offing to guide you to a berth. I find it hard to beat at any other haven, and the ‘town’ is a very short stagger from your boat a bit later. It has a selection of decent pubs, live music, posh eating at The George, best views at the Royal Solent, party atmosphere at The Hut, what’s not to like?

Was in Yarmouth last Thursday evening in a mate's Griffon having been into Newtown Creek (on the anchor) the night beforehand.

Agree the berthing staff are excellent, the town lovely and the cask beer in The Bugle acceptable to a Northerner ;)
