iOS7 - for those who need to know this

Luddites please forgive and please ignore.

iOS7? Have a good look at it on SOMEBODY else's device before you upgrade (ie iPhone or iPad). You cannot go back. It became available in UK last evening. IMHO the new user interface is a big step backwards and some may find it confusing to say the least. The flat 'minimalist' look 'looks' very dated and the whiteness is hard on the eyes. UGHHH! Some will love it, some will hate it. I like progressive change but . . . it may grow on me but for now sticking with iOS 6, at least till iOS7.1 released.

Under the bonnet it's basically the same but instead of clear 'buttons' in many of the apps there are unclear pastel symbols and some apps have been rearranged quite a bit. IMHO it's ease of use has dropped as low as Android levels. The only improvement most will like is quick access to regularly used settings such as brightness, airplane mode, torch, etc. Steve Jobs may have blown a gasket had he lived to stop it!

Hope one of my favourite boating aids had not taken a step back.

Function destroyed by style?

Just a warning to the many boaters who have iOS devices. Think before you update.

I updated last night, not sure why but did anyway. I liked it at first, but now not so sure. It is the same system but with a new dress. There are a few nice features, mostly finding out as I use it, but there are a few things that I miss. Would certainly agree that you need to look on another device before upgrading!
 
My very initial impression was similar to yours but 24 hours later and using it a lot today, as everyday, it's already started growing on me.. Even apps that haven't yet updated to the new keyboard look "old".. From a functional perspective, yes, they have moved things around but they have also added functionality that while minor is still very useful..

As you say some will love it and some will hate it, guess it depends if you like change or not.. I for one think IOS needed a facelift because it was starting to get a bit long in the tooth..

There are some nice very useful functional improvements, but the UI is not as quite intuitive as it used to be. Not a prob for existing users, but newbies to iOS may not find it as easy to pick up as the old style UI. Agree iOS needed some visual updating but it's seems to have made the same mistake as Office 2013 (ie white and pastels hard on the eyes).
 
Unusual for a 7 metre boat from the same company to be worse than its 6 metre.

I suspect 7.1 will just be a just a bigger swimming platform on the back.

LOL :) The UI lacks texture, which I know was deliberate, perhaps refined a little too much. The new functions are good, but don't like the new weather app.
 
You posted too late Froggie old chap! Brother in law advised me to sync my phone today - hadn't done it in about eighteen months (yes, I know, I know!). Ended up about an hour later with something resembling a five year old's electronic toy.

I spose it'll grow on me. Just like the forum changes here a while back - no one seems to be bleating about that any more.
 
I never update until n.1 release comes out as it'll be buggy until then...... Please carry on chaps and report all your issues to Apple :D
 
Just upgraded, first impressions were not as good but after looking around and using it its starting to grow on me.
Like the option to block calls.
Easier to close apps as well.
Bit to pastel shades for me though
 
Just updated the ipad.
Colours look quite bright for the standard icons, and a bit ghostly for the standard apps, but it looks smart overall, and no problems so far.
 
Worth it for the swipe up shortcut menu from the home screen IMHO. Not having to dive deep into the settings menu to turn on/off Wi-Fi/Bluetooth is worth the download alone!

Auto updating apps, better task switching, being able to search in the address bar of Safari, and animated bubbly wallpaper too :)
 
I like it.

The designed simplicity however, instead of being designed by 1 million workers, working for a year could have been done my one bloke 15 minutes before the deadline.

He wouldn't have had time to make it fancy and would have used, er, simple fonts with a white background as well.

Without wishing to start a flame war I've always regarded anything Apple as over hyped, overpriced, under engineered tat but seeing the drooling about stuff that's been in Android (call blocking, one stop settings, proper task manager, etc) for years makes me so glad I avoid the stuff the like the plague.
