Got back last night from our much awaited (and dreaded by some) sunsail flotilla
Thanks to all for previous replies especially Russell,Jeremy W,Twister ken,Sailbad,Beancounter,Ruth and Boatman, all good advice, especially in retrospect
Seven of us,inc 2 teenage kids on Oceanis 411,not much experience between us(I only sail on windermere)
Not without petty but hardly serious problems BUT absolutely brilliant week!!
Boat was unbelievable after my humble Hurley but few small issues as first time out since winter ie tainted water in tanks, outboard (a £60 extra)ancient, unserviced and unusable 95% of time and saloon table collapsed in bits as hostess demonstated- priceless
Despite this lead crew were fantastic esp Warren the South African skipper, unbelievably cheerful and nothing too much trouble
cant believe how much ground we covered , lots of quite long passages (for someone used to Windermere, expecting short hops)was glad of hand held gps cos I'm sure I would have struggled to find some of our rendezvous if I hadnt paid attention or had gps backup as many inlets look the same.
Cant recommend this type of hol enough if like us you have some nervous inexperienced types ie hands clenched all thro coach transfer and by end of week easing main out to try to gain bit more pace
Even stern to mooring was managed without drama(every time Warren stood on the quay with his arms crossed above his head- stand by to drop hook- we burst into "Prince Charming" unfortunately he is too young to remember Adam Ant
My only criticism would be that although there is no element of being shepherded around and is not mother duck sailing by any means we were asked to be in certain marinas by set times and it so happened once or twice that after a very becalmed day the wind would pick up just as it was time to get into our mooring for the night so it would have been nice to stay out a bit longer especially as it tended to be only 4 or 4.30 so not exactly dark but obviously the crew are keen to get every one in in case the marina gets busy
To sum up excellent week and the ABSOLUTE HIGHLIGHT was the last night in party mode after presentation ceremony bought a leonard cohen cd from guy in bar and put "Dance me to the end of love" (very greek sound for those who dont know it) on cockpit speaker as Deb and I smooched around the cockpit table much to amusement of lead crew next door.Came home from work and still playing on hi fi in conservatory!!
Hope havent bored you old salts to death
Tom

Even grizzled old salts will appreciate your enthusiasm, and maybe even have the odd tear in their eyes, as they remember such exuberant voyages of adventure and discovery

Well done!

Well done Tom
Glad you enjoyed it.
Tell me something?
Will you take the same amount of clothes on the next one?

Nice one! You've got me all fired up for our trip in a couple of weeks time.
I'm interested in your comment about getting in early to ports - one of the reasons we are going in June this year - apart from having to squeeze the holiday around son's graduation & daughter's gap-year safari - is that our skipper last year told us that if we went a few weeks earlier (than late July) we would be able to stay afloat a bit longer. Like you, we found that having to be in early a bit restricting - maybe it depends on the destination.

Glad you had a great time

John

All sounds brilliant. Sounds altho there were no disasters so you weren't trying hard enough /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

i am looking forward to mine now.

only thing i would do next time. at about 4:30 radio lead boat. say you had long lunch and trouble getting anchor up/unfurling genny/ getting crew out the sea and you will be late and see them about 7:00pm. they will say okay thanks for letting us know and you head back across the bay entrance with all sails up until you decide you have had enough or til 6:30 comes.

we were always the last boat in. never had a problem with lead crew so long as we let them know. just a tip. The 411 is a big boat. i am looking forward to first sail with SWMBO an ONLY crew.

Met Warren last year - an all round nice-guy, if a real party animal with an enviable ability to appear as fresh as a daisy the morning after. It's having someone like that, that makes the holiday work.

I believe its the insurance that means the charter yachts can't stay out after 6pm. So the skippers try to add in an extra margin, to avoid a last-minute rush and the trouble of fitting a lot of extra yachts into an already crowded harbour. Its up to you to make sure you get your full money's worth, I'm sure you will have noticed some (like Sailbad) did.

The Ionian is well-known for its very light wind through most of the day during summer. With the extra confidence, another time you might try either very late in the season, or SW Turkey.

411 is big

but is a sweetie under power. Only trouble we ever had was trying to anchor off and take a sternline ashore in a strong crosswind. There is a LOT of windage!

Re: 411 is big

agreed
they are cavernous inside but that stern line takes some pressure
I once had one snap on me on a smaller Ben and just used to swing rather than be bothered with a stern line. cos if it does go you are into your neighbour v quickly

Re: 411 is big

The time it happened to us, swinging free wasn't much of an option, it would have put us slap bang in the middle of the approach channel to the marina. See pic below. Marina was chokka. We were trying to anchor with a line ashore off the coast line at the bottom of the pic, which was already crowded with other overspill boats. Wind was blowing strongly down the cove from the l.h side of the pic. In the end, we gave up and anchored swinging in the passage between this island and the next one south-east. Incidentally, it's Palmizana, Croatia.

What's it like?
I've thought about it but a wee bit put off as I've heard

Saling fantastic
Locals surly
Weather indifferent

Is that a fair assessment?

Re: Croatia

Sailing great (if there's wind)
Locals lovely
Weather - well it's the Med, so good except when bad, it's very very bad. (but we had a flawless 14 days weatherwise)
Nude sailing very popular (take your best binos)

But CROWDED.
