Investigators looking into what caused the cargo ship to run aground have discovered

Quite common for the mate to fall asleep on watch.I can think of several examples and at least one where the ship drove up a reef at full speed.Ive got some old photos somewhere.

They fall asleep with monotonous regularity, even when they haven't been on the bevvy. Short sea coasting is an exercise in sleep deprivation due to owners being cheapskates and having the minimum crew the IMO will let them get away with.

The BBC, we will make a crisis out of a drama/non story on a slow news day!

#6 sounds about right, I once worked on a 3000 ton coaster, 12 on 12 off watches, arrive in port spend your off watch loading and trimming and back on watch again as soon as you have loaded.

Normal practice, but who cares about the poor seaman eh, so long as we get cheap everything in a shop! But then when it goes tits up, hey lets blame the Master, Ch Mate, OOW for being an incompetent idiot. I've yet to see an owner up in front of a court for negligence. If you complain you have no job, so what do you do - plenty of Philippine's, Indonesian, Master & Mates out there who work for a $1000 a month!!!!!!
