I am looking at buying a 500w inverter, most of the smaller ones 300-500 watt have crocodile clips to connect to the battery, is this the way to go, just connect it when you use it, or should it be permantly connected to the battery.
I will be using it everyday..

Cheers :-)

Conne3ct it permanently with appropriate wire dimensions and a fuse.
A 500W inverter draws 50 amps!!! That gives the crocs toothache :((

Agreed, and I will add that they go rusty in minutes.....well maybe days.

I would look at an inverter which has a remote on/off swirch capability built in or at least put an on/off switch in the positive line between the battery and the inverter.
I have a Mastervolt 150watt unit which has the remote facility and it makes it very easy to switch the inverter off when not in use and save the small drain as well as providing an additional safety factor.

Have you though about puting a couple of high power fused leads to sockets in places where you might want power, eg cabin & deck? and then replacing the clips with a plug?

Do not use clips, wire it in properly.

If anyone else is looking for inverters.....I saw some very cheap ones here (http://www.northerntooluk.com/)

doubtless you get what you pay for, but £76 for a 600watt unit is pretty cheap even allowing for that.

Is that the guy...

.. (from Cork, R of I) selling cheap inverters right at the back of the upstairs hall at the boat show?

Not as far as I know....Northern Tools are based in Portsmouth, and have a printed catalogue selling everything from sausage stuffers to generators.

Don't know about these particular invertors but do beware of units that do not give a half reasonable or modified Sine Wave. If they give what is more like a Square Wave, they will not be suitable for sensitive applications.
