When I think back 40 years to when we did these calculations for the 11+, the key thing was that you show your workings. I don't believe that any RYA examiner would penalise you if you used the arithmetic method, provided you wrote down the workings (as was done ealrier in this thread) so that any working could be checked and errors could be traced (again, as was done earlier in this thread). In any case. all workings should be checked against a rough sanity number arrived mentally (as also was done in this thread). The RYA examiners (from what I've read) appear to focus on common sense approaches to problems. I'd prefer to jot down simple arithmetic rather than try to work with a graphical solution at sea in a small boat.

Couldn't agree more. Much of the current exam is ridiculous and must have been written by someone who has no idea about the practical aspects of sailing at all. There is one question on the current paper that requires you to interpolate when going thru The Swinge. If you did as the question requires in real life there will be a need for an additional lifeboat permenately on call there! Ridiculous. Loses the RYA any respect I may have had for them.
