I know this has been discussed but I cant find the thread. Can anyone recommend a good website for watching streaming TV or movies on the boat. I have used Filmon which is great but the choice is limited and I was disappointed with Netflix.

Happy Noo Year!

Have you tried tvcatchup.com? It streams all the free to air channels live, in very good quality. There's also an app they do for iPads and android.

tvcatchup.com didn't work when I tried it in France. I found out that it has a history in that respect. Long story involving them blacklisting proxy server's apart from one they happened to own. I can't check just now but imagine it still doesn't work from outside UK.

Filmon.com worked well for me and has all Freeview channels (same as tvcatchup). However, OP is looking for more channels than Filmon. I did have a good look for something better earlier this year and gave up.

I'll keep an eye on this thread in case someone has found a better one than Filmon for use outside UK.

People outside UK have mentioned using expatshield before to watch the likes of iPlayer/tvcatchup...

The problem with EX-PAT SHIELD is that it keeps buffering. BUT beware of malware on it. it cost us a few bob to remove the malware and have a anti-malware installed.

We now only use FILM ON.

Good luck

Peter

Thanks everyone. Outside the Uk you can just subscribe to BBc player but its a bit expensive if you are only dipping in occasionally. it probably costs the same as a good software programme that gives you an IP address in a country of your choice. Any of those that I have tried cause the stream to continuously buffer though.

... my search continues...

Expatshield hasn't given us any computer problems but adverts are a nuisance unless using the paid-for version. If buffering a problem, we use iplayer to download and watch later. Get better playback results when saved as Windows Mediaplayer file. For watching streaming, Filmon is better but as others have said, reduced content.

Interesting that some people found Malware associated with ExPAtShield. I've never had a problem. It was good for a while and then became very slow (moaned about that in a thread in summer). However, I still managed to watch some programs using it. However, Filmon was usuall much better and didn't have as many buffering problems.

Still, ExPatShield (UK based proxy) has a place. I never had problems with ads. but I think that was because of the way I used it. Can't remember exactly but think I left the original window open but turned volume down and also paused the ad. that usually ran all the time. Then I ran BBC iPlayer on another browser screen and had very few problems. If you close the instance running the adverts ExPAtShield just opens another one (with sound back on). You still get some ads. at top of screen if just browsing but I only watched TV on full screen so only saw normal TV with no adverts from ExPAtShield.

I preferred Filmon for live TV and only reverted to ExPAtShield for BBC iPlayer (because I could start prog. from beginning when live or download it later).

I also found PirateBay & other sites useful to get torrents. It's surprising how often people post current UK TV programs within a few hours and download doesn't need ExPatShield (so can be quicker than via iPlayer).

I've just tried stream2watch but it asked me to install a new Codec pack. I always treat this as a warning to do a lot more checking so decided not to us the site yet.
