My answer to that would be " very dirty cos I have not seen it for 12 months"

The other answer that springs to mind is " Foxtrot Oscar " /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

The next call will be......you spoke to one of our representatives recently and expressed an interest in our "Internet web directory"........

The same scam works with the market research calls you get, followed a couple of days/weeks later by a call claiming you expressed an interest in "our service"

They sometimes ask for your name and date of birth to confirm that they spoke to you.
Later on your company will recieve an invoice for their services saying that the person they spoke to asked for it and gave date of birth as an order reference.
This is definatly a rip off scam.

Mike.

Had someone phone me up and say that I had spoken to them ealrier in June and confirmed that they had printed up the safety leaflet with my name address company details etc and they were now ready to take payment. I insisted on not being able to recall the conversation and she insisted I committed to it after disagreeing with her for a minute she hung up. She was a Bitch any way.

Re: When is a scam

not a scam.

About once a month we get a call asking us to place a support advert in a public information book, for schools or hospitals blah blah. I checked one out, as it claimed to be supported by our local police force and targeted at our schools. Yes the police had given their blessing and no nothing ever arrived at the schools. Oh! and the phone number of the organizers won't take incoming calls. Another one for our local fire brigade never appeared nor did the fitness advice for pensioners that was to be sent out to health centres. Now this last one is interesting as I did get to see the publication. Another local company got involved, because a staff member fell for the " You promised to support us" thing. To say the production values were cheap unstates it. None have turned up at any local surgeries either.

So it appears that reputable local bodies are being manipulated into allowing scammers to use them to scam business'. It appears that staff need to be trained not to commit to anything by phone.

Another salutory tale from my business academy goes like this. Many years ago a reputable regional business magazine phone me touting for advertising. Having discussed it with the rep who phoned I said no thanks. Three months later I received a copy of the mag with a jazzed up copy of my Yellow Pages add, and a bill for £220.

They sued and we went to an arbitration hearing. I said they didn't get an order and they said they did. They had a scribbled mock up of the page layout with my name down for a square. They won. They had "documentory proof". At that time I only used to write things I did in my diary not things I didn't do. That's changed.

Re: When is a scam

Seems to be an epidemic of scams at the moment. These people should be dealt with most severly by the courts The problem is that busnesse people like myself become very cynical and untrusting of everyone and everything as a result of these rogues. What is the world coming too........

Just set up my new office in Cowes - usual fun with BT putting in the lines but eventually they left and as I sat down the phone rang!

'Good Morning, xxxxxxxxxxxxx.Com Ltd, how can help you?' says me in my best mock receptionist tone.

'Hi, I'm calling from Tele2 and we can save you blah blah blah on your phone bill etc against BT.' Says chirpy telesales bod from script.

'Blimey!' says I, 'that was bloody quick - where did you get this number from?'

'Oh,' says the bod 'BT give them to us. . . .' /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif
