Internet connection?

You've a limited number of options. Near shore you can use mobile phone connection. Ashore you might be able to get free or paid for wifi connection. Off shore you'd need satellite phone, or radio connection.

Which are you after? Then various people with more experience in each area can point you towards best fit.

The liveaboard forum here is a good place for latest best deals on Mobile phone deals.

Wifi connections are purely down to the exact location you are in at any time.

Offshore connnections can probably be discussed on any of the forums

You may be able to get wifi. For more reliable connection, think mobile phone. For best deals, have a look in liveaboard forum, they keep more up to date on these

WiFi every time . . .

Internet cafes everywhere are offering WiFi, plus if you have a booster aerial you can usually find some unsuspecting person who has left their network unprotected.

(Or so I've heard . . . and yes, it's criminal I suppose, but it's a victimless crime . . .)

Skype voice calls to regular phones are clear as a bell 95% of the time at just 1.7 cents a minute to anywhere in Europe.

I'm still managing to keep my (internet-based) business together six months after leaving home . . .

Hope this helps,

Nick

There's 18 apartments in the building in which I live and I have a choice of 4 to choose from!!! 2 have default (i.e. none) password set on the router as well so it's a good job I'm honest.

I often wonder if their systems are spewing out spam without them even knowing.

I find free, unprotected wi fi all over the world. Best one was sitting in hotel room near quayside in St Johns Newfoundland - hotel net down, so used the wifi from one of the oilrig supply ships on the quay. Great signal - until their techies started working on it and asked me to leave.......

it's not actually that easy for non techies to make their connection secure , I use a D Link but as far as I know it's still not secure simply because I don't know how to make it secure . The simple instructions were written by a seven year old post grad in computer speak

If nobody else posts on this a new topic in the next 24 hours I will because I too have a DLink open for anybody in range to use and i would like to secure it. So any advice about what WEP etc means would be much appreciated.

There was a program on R4 last night about 21.00 i think called link. The Police(section on computer crime) said that in their checks on certain on average 25% of WiFi are not protected against hackers!

My experiences of WiFi in France in 2005 wasn't good. In fact i only found decent Internet Cafes in large towns. Also beware GPRS - i bought a Vodaphone datacard before i left which was only supposed to charge me by the amount of data sent/received, therefore could, in theory, be left on like broadband. Result - got charged astronomical sums by Vodaphone for roaming, on top of the data charge. Thankfully it was a PAYG simm, so i stopped using it after the first £20 got used up after 2 emails. Vodaphone never gave me an acceptable reason - just blamed it on SFR - the French network it is supposed to be in partnership with, despite my contract being with Vodafone. Chucked it after that!

Can I ask a totally goofy question.

I have a laptop that uses one of these these in its card slot.

If I wanted to add a booster aerial (and I do) how would I go about this ? and where would I get one ?

I have tried using it in marinas and of course it just doesn’t get a signal... but you guys give me hope.

Yes 3G or GPRS roaming costs a bomb. Alternatively buy a Vodafone data-card and then the local Vodafone network prepay SIM for where you're going. You can generally get these for a fiver or so on Ebay (I've just bought one for Portugal), or just buy it when you're over there. Vodafone are in most European countries so you have no problem with the card being SIM-locked to other networks.

By way of comparison Voda Portugal data rate is EUR 2.4 /Mb compared to about £10 if you roam on a UK SIM.

Make sure you turn off all your background software like Microsoft updates as you don't want it to be downloading a 40Mb file in the background that you don't know about!

You'd be better with one of

these

in a USB slot

I have my laptop on the saloon table, and the adaptor sits on the cabin roof, (get a USB extension cable if necessary).

Works a treat where without it, I had to sit in the cockpit in the cold
