Having just returned from a longish trip away, one of the bugbears when ashore was finding a local internet cafe to carry out ones banking, emails etc.

This is one for you prehaps Kim but we have a BB for fuel prices, pubs & resturants so how about one to publicise the location of internet access points.

Unless someone is going to tell me that something already exists.

Cheers

Trouble is you didn't say where 'abroad' you were. Things vary tremendously from country to country. In rural Holland, for example, Internet cafes are not the best bet, Public Libraries, on the other hand almost always provide on-line access facilities(and cheap) Same applies to other countries. Cafes are for the larger conurbations.

back to your original question

Can we have a forum relating to communications abroad?
A good idea. I retire in October this year and I'm wanting to maintain a web site of my travels whilst I travel, I would hope to update it weekly. There are lots of posts on the topic but it is a fast moving area and perhaps worthy of a forum. Thats my two pennuth.

We too have got pocketmail - it's very cheap and easy to use and at least you can keep in touch without going ashore if you have a mobile phone. It interfaces with a pc, so you are not tied to the small keyboard. I'm surprised that it isn't possible to buy in UK as I would have expected someone to have taken a franchise for them. Still, delivery from the States took only 5 days and I activated it on the net.

Machine costs $99 and a years contract is a further $145 thus making it cheaper than internet cafes for e mailing.

Re: back to your original question

Have a look at my web site - link below. There is a large section there on Communications in European Waters

It's worth looking out for local public libraries. Many of them have internet connections at low prices (sometimes even free). You usually have to pay for printouts, though.
