Hi,

I currently hold a motorboat license that I received in Germany in 1978 (SportBoot - see attachment). I travel a lot to Thailand and Spain and I was wondering how could I obtain an international license that would allow me ot operate in those countries and around the world? I would appreciate your help and any suggestions.

I am using motor boats over 25 meters.

Thank you

Mike

No such thing as an "International Motor Boat Licence".

The nearest is an International Certificate of Competence which is issued by your government under a United Nations agreement. You can find out about it from the RYA www.rya.org.uk although the requirements for having one are written from a UK perspective.

You will need to contact the body that issued your current licence to see if that entitles you to have an ICC.

Be aware though that its acceptability varies, but in many countries there is no requirement for visitors to have any form of licence for a private leisure yacht. However some countries have licencing requirements for boats registered in their state - Spain, Croatia and Greece as examples, typically aimed at charter yachts. Also the ICC is for pleasure users so may not be acceptable for boats over 24 metres or commercial work where the licencing requirement may be determined by the state of registration of the boat.

- as long as you dont want to work as a charter Captain, your license is valid.
