Hello I am re-antifouling and I have always used International Micron Extra with excellent results. Two years in the water and only superficial slime on lift out.

I am being recommended to switch to Hempel Tiger Extra, but I believe it is because the chandler has a better deal with Hempel paints. Should I do it?

Is Hempel Tiger Extra just as good as International Micron Extra?

Thank you in advance.

I had International Micron Extra for two years between lift outs.

For the first time with a lift out after two years in the water, only a little slime and I wondered why I had bothered to lift out and redo it.

This second time however, in the second year we have had a very significant amount of fouling.
So either the yard has ripped me off and put something else on and made me pay for the expensive International Micron, or some how conditions have changed significantly favouring a different type of growth.

The boat had not changed location but the weather was unusual this year.

It seems to be a matter of luck what will work well from one year to the next......

Switched from Tiger Extra to Seajet Shogun 6 years ago, until this year Shogun (one thin overall coat each year, two round waterline using 2.5 litres for a beamy 35-footer) much better. Just lifted out after 7 months and Shogun not as good as previous years - actually had some small amount of weed on the bottom - previous years nothing but a bit on slime on the AF.

I do wonder if the makers change composition, or it could just be that water conditions were different.

Have used either Micron or Tiger Extra for years, usually two seasons out of either. Can't tell a lot of difference in fouling between either of them. Both benefit from a scrub in July/ August, though usually only from slime. There is probably more effect from when we get warm weather than switching between them. Don't know what either concoction is like for the past year or two as tend to buy old stock from boat jumbles.

I have always been a satisfied user of Tiger Extra and will do so again on next lift out. I only use 1 coat and am always surprised at how good she comes out - just the slime that others report.

Micron Extra has a higher volume of solids (60% vs 52%) and a higher specific gravity (1.9 vs 1.8), so logic would suggest it's got more active ingredients in it.

I use Micron Extra, the boat stays in the water for 2 years continuously - no scrubs, no washes - and only has a little slime on it when lifted. I'd stick with Micron Extra.
