Planning to give my Europe dinghy a bit of a spruce up in the coming weeks. It doesn't need to go back to the bare wood, so was hoping to just give the decks a rub down and put another couple of coats of varnish on, but it seems that International have stopped making Goldspar...

Any clues where I can get some? None at Purple Marine or Force 4. Or suggestions as to else might go ok over the top? Failing any advice I'll probably just slap their new one-pack poly 'Compass' over it and hope it works!

I raised hell with International last year, when I couldn't get any Goldspar. The replacement is Compass which is a complete bitch to apply, especially if the surface is not horizontal. It runs and sags for a very long time. On horizontal surfaces it is fine, and appears to have better resistance to UV than Goldspar.

The product is out of production, and has been for a while, so any you get will be old stock, so caveat emptor.

Lots of vertical and curved surfaces, sounds like Compass won't be great.

Is it possible to put a traditional varnish like Epifanes over polyeurethane or will I have to take it back to bare wood and start again? I would prefer to avoid this really, as the surface to be coated is a ply with only a thin sapele mahogany veneer on it, and I have stripped it several times now - don't want to sand through! Will have a go if necessary though.

From force 4 website: (about epifanes) "It can also be applied over intact existing one and two-component varnishes"

So I guess I'll have a go!
 
International Goldspar

Morgan Marine in Brightlingsea still have two 750ml tins in stock. Give them a call and they might mail order them to you.
