More details of the above event HERE for those who don't know.

I am planning to go out on the evening of Monday 27th with a few chaps, a sensible supply of beer and bacon butty materials, find a decent anchorage and stay there for 24 hours.

Hopefully we will get to see the ships at some stage too !

Its going to be totally chaotic, especialy when the see gets churned up during Tuesday morning by the influx of boats.

Any recommendations for a good location? Assuming no particularly strong winds of course.

Re: International Fleet Review - Best Mooring?

Seaview Bay, Stokes Bay, Osborne Bay, Almost anywhere along the Island shore from Wooton Creek to Osborne Bay. All depends on the wind direction. I think you may find many people trying to do the same thing so there could be some good on-water parties going on. If it's calm enough how about a few 'sunflowers'?

Bosham, Newtown Creek, Yarmouth, Lulworth, hopefully there will be a nice quiet spot somewhere. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

We have similar thoughts - of course the wind direction will have a lot to do with it.

Any idea if it will be possible to get a reasonable view of the Son et Lumiere from the water?

I have read somewhere that the display is deliberately intended to be visible by the land based specatators, so we will only get a 'behind the scenes' view from the sea.

I am going to give it a miss because there will be a multitude of boats, mostly faster than ours, heading to Southsea towards the end of the afternoon. Would prefer to be heading back to base in Southampton, myself. The air display should be visible though.

Haven't quite worked out where the Son et Lumiere (why is it French?) is to be held yet. Is it in the yellow area shown as 'Reserved Area' on the QHM chart, adjacent to the underwater barrier?

I hope you have a great time Nick, and the same to all the other yachtsmen who go to watch. But I wonder, does anyone else, like me, find the idea of the RN selling corporate packages on warships a teensie bit disgusting?

Plan at the moment is to stay on boat at gosport for Monday night and come out first thing in morning, probably to southern anchorages, but depends on wind direction. I was on a lee shore for the last review and with a strong wind, spent more time worrying about the anchor than watching the spectacle.

Just so you know in advance, I'll be stationed off Ryde Sands - On duty! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It may make your descison where to anchor easier /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Depends what happens to the money. If it goes back into the treasury and reduces the tax burden for Defence, then I don't have a big issue with it - even though it is a drop in the ocean.

However, being a cynical old git, I suspect that for corporate hospitality read political hospitality, and all that it involves....

I reckon I'll need one (or 2). Sure as eggs won't be taking anything stronger that day - will be "overseeing" a bunch of ribs who are marshelling - the thought makes my mind boggle. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I'll keep ane eye out. I'll be on a rib which I'm bringing round from the Itchen early Monday morning - got to have my blue light fitted!

Thanks for the offer, don't be surprised if I take it up!

Hope you will have a nice long tow rope on board David. I fancy there could be a few leaning their boats over at low tide to check the anti-fouling /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The QHM restricted areas start on 22nd so that could mean that most of the ships will be at anchor by then... Sat and Sun might be a better bet to visit them if you're not fussed about seeing the queen!
The 'mock battle' is best viewed from land, Southsea Castle area.(Princess Anne will have the best view after tea at the Castle) I'm going on me bike and going early.....
