What a surprise in this mornings post - a renewal form - it's life of 5 years is up. Why on earth does an ICC need renewing - can I loose my competence in 5 years? If so there is no requirement for a re test.

Of course, this is just another money making scheme from our useless self appointed international body.

Its gone in the bin - I am sure the Greeks and Turks wont notice the date on mine - I have never shown it to them anyway.
 
They'll ask for it in Croatia!! I'm sure carrying one is normally proof against being asked but there are circumstances where one would be useful.
 
I think you will find that the 5 year validity is to do with the international agreement between states and not the RYA. This ill informed comment is raised regularly on the forum which obviously no one ever reads! :)

Not quite self-appointed. I believe HMG delegates its treaty obligations in respect of ICC to the RYA. On the other hand, AFAIK there is nothing in the treaty that requires the certificate to have a finite time span (although there is a requirement it should conform to a certain physical format, which it doesn't:ambivalence:). Yes, it's a nonsense.

Good luck with your out-of-date one: there's always one official who'll check everything. Hope you don't meet him/her.

PS re ctva's post: I waded through the treaty a while ago and as I implied above, I don't think there's any stipulation as to length of the ICC (except physical length of the actual certificate, which the RYA, for one, ignore). It is, of course, possible that I'm wrong in this since the process caused me to lose the will to live.

I had a look as well, couldn't find the five years mentioned either. Think it's the MCA which approves those allowed to issue, not just the RYA, brit sub aqua club can as well. Maybe the 5 year renewal comes from the MCA.
Anyone know for sure?

I have a Yacht Master as well - better see if that has an expiry date!!!! In Greek wine terms it's €2 per litre so that's a lot of wine!!!! I suppose I will renew once my rant has died. Might as well join for a year - same price and see what other freebies I get.

Don't think so, my ICC has no end date, (Dutch: klein vaarbewijs II, is also valid as an ICC) there was a limitation till your 70th birthday, but that's also skipped.

Its the same logic that requires you to renew your SSSI and to renew your driving licence at 70- and to renew your passport. All are money making scams. HMG are particularly good at it. About the only thing they are good at.

When I got back home, Mr Postman delivered a icc renewal letter

Hmmm... shall I or shant I

Has anybody out there been asked to show one ?

and if not what would happen , ?

Regularly asked for if you charter a boat as many countries require evidence of competence to charter a boat under their flag. Less frequently for independent travellers, but could be a godsend if you ever had any difficulties with authorities - for example calling the coastguard in Greece.

Cheap insurance and if you join RYA you can not only get your renewal free but recover the subscription costs with discounts offered by some marinas (appreciate discounts are also available to members of other organisations).

It's needed (for various values of need) in parts of the Med. I imagine on most of your Atlantic circuit nobody had ever heard of such a thing. You certainly don't need it for sailing in the UK or the near Continent. So the answer to your question depends where you sail.

I got one a while ago because my parents were going on holiday in Croatia and the charter company insisted that someone have one. They solved the problem by inviting me along, having sent off a copy of my old Dazed Kipper ticket to get an ICC. Later, to prepare for subsequent years, they both went and did a half-day ICC course at Lymington.

My ICC has probably expired now, or nearly so. I have no intention of renewing it unless and until I go to Croatia or Greece again.

As you grow older you'll find physical entropy is a fact of life - that's why, after your 70th birthday you've got to apply, every 4 years for a new driving licence.
I've been advised to not tell anyone that I'm uni-ocular and fall over if my blood alcohol falls too low.
Fortunately I didn't have to apply - the RYA just sent the replacement in the post, so no half-truths or outright falsehoods required.
