Intermittent Depth reading on Raymarine e125

The plotter on my new (to me) boat stops giving a depth when I get up on the plane. Is this likely to be a fouling issue of something else? Can anyone advise please?

Turbulent flow over the transducer. Common problem that comes up on here from time to time. Remedy is to relocate the transducer.

Perhaps the transducer location is not ideal?
If too far forward then air may get under it when on the plane?

A word of warning before you try relocating the transducer - which btw could be difficult, depending on its type (transom mount or through hull?).
The quality of the thing itself also matters, in fact some transducers simply don't work above a certain speed regardless of their placement.
If the transducer was factory installed, it's unlikely that you can do much better by moving it anywhere else.
Accepting to not have depth reading while planning is a much easier workaround.
Also because it's very unlikely that the sounder would save the day if you're heading towards a sand bank at 30kts...

I was hoping you wouldn’t say that. The boat is five years old but the previous owner might not have worried about it! I might fit a second independent gauge if I can’t sort it.

It was a factory option I think. I love the comment about not being much use at speed ??
I had a Fairline Sprint with a forward facing echosounder... totally useless as we charged everywhere at 30knots?

It is through hull or in a bath of oil. If oil maybe it needs refilling.

Through hull+factory installed=waste of time trying a better placement.
With the need to close the hole, on top of it.
In your boots, I'd live with what you've got. If the reading is reliable and stable at low speed, that's all you need, imho.

Have you or the prior owner installed a hull fitting forward of the depth sounder that could be interrupting the flow ?

If it is in the manufactures position call the dealer. You never know they may say oh yes they do that it have another solution.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll call the guys at Wessex marine as they are the dealers. Otherwise I think I will live with it.

Boat next door to me had full nav gear refurbished,latest kit and fitted by margarine.
Depth stopped working at any speed after a lot of staffing margarine had specified "wrong" transducer
Boat had to be lifted and different unit installed at dealers expense.
Please insert Ray marine.

My Navman depth sounder started to give false readings and was intermittent underway. Fitted an 'in hull' Airmar P79 which was ok (not perfect) until lift out then replaced the Navman with an Airmar B50 through hull.

Good to know I am not the only one! This is our sixth boat and it is a new problem to me.

the P79 was very easy to fit- it was leading the wire to the plotter that took the time.
