Interesting new Multimeter

Looks like a solution looking for a problem. One of my smaller meters isn't much bigger than a phone anyway.

Up to a point I'd agree with you absolutely, but for those who have a want/need for datalogging and producing spreadsheets as some of my commercial colleagues do, it will have its uses over and above whats easily available now.

I just thought it was worth making people aware of thats all.

Saw this and thought, just what I need, a new meter to go with my other 12.

Had a look. Meh!

How do you read them all at the same time? You don't have compound eyes by any chance, and do you average the results you get from the 12 you already have...;);)

I confess to having three...all pretty basic. A small Tandy autoranging digital one on the boat...which only has a battery and a small solar panel....That one is fine as long as you remember to switch it off, and two rather nasty chinese ones..one from a Plumbers Merchants that came with my old job and one from Aldi that is my backup. I chiefly use them for fault chasing on boilers at which they are OK, but boiler contacts just get smaller and smaller and finding a decent contact to get a measurement from just gets harder and harder...but I manage most of the time.

I'd be very interested in a smart app which took the data from the car info socket (the OBDII) so that I can read the info on a phone while sitting as a passenger.

Doesn't look as if Voltset can do this yet.

But there are apps which do this already. My son plugs the OBD dongle into the socket on the car and then we drive along monitoring all the ECU functions on his phone.

I must have had my eyes shut ! Just found a lot of useful apps. Thanks

So let me get this right. I can have...

A) one device with 3 cables coming from it and no display that requires connecting to a second device with a display

Or

B) one self-contained device with 2 cables and its own display

Why would anyone choose A in preference to B?

If you saw how much some boiler engineers carry round with them then a small device that plugs into a smartphone they would be carrying anyway and which can upload data to their office computer could indeed have its uses...particularly those I mentioned who have long term commitments to maintaining and monitoring fairly complex commercial heating systems. I suppose its as much about connectivity and saving a bit of time for such people. Anyway I know one or two people who specialise in that area who are moderately upbeat about what it can do for them. I don't expect it will have any relevance for many for whom the meter they currently (geddit) use is probably more than adequate.

Yes from your explanation perhaps this small device might be beneficial for some people but there may be resistance (gedditt) from your typical DIY home/car/boat/whatever amateur and occasional user of multimeters.

Not the same, I know, but here's a related tool that added a lot of value for me: a pocket oscilloscope for £40-ish including probes etc: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270972259947

After fixing a broken PC monitor and my son's projector clock this morning, I commented to SWMBO how much value it added and the impact it could have had when I was an electronics student many years ago.

Useful for measuring voltages, frequencies, displaying signals, generating signals, etc. Given what it is, it does not have full multimeter functionality i.e. resistance, capacitance, etc but really good if you are building and/or troubleshooting digital circuits, etc.

+1 . Quite pleased with mine.

Nearly, but missed. Some of the features are useful, but probably not to me. IF they'd managed to get in a dual trace oscilloscope in there too, then THAT would be been useful.

For the moment, I'll stick with my trusty Fluke.

Seriously, you don't have an ELM 327? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-OBD2-ELM327-V1-5-Bluetooth-Car-Scanner-Android-Torque-Auto-Scan-Tool-OBD-II-/111088326026?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item19dd61558a

I was demonstrating my ELM327 to my BIL only yesterday. He's yesterdays top mechanic, now enlightened.

Oh look, a data logging multimeter. How retro :)

OK so it uses a smartphone, I do geddit, I might even get it, but it's hardly ground breaking

I've no connection with this outfit I hasten to add, but on another forum there are a bunch of us planning to become early buyers/users as we think it has quite a lot to offer.

Oh....and its a gadget so it MUST be good mustn't it:D:D:D

I think it'll have microscopic market penetration, and the cost of electrical isolation and type approval will make it very expensive for what it is. Given that a fairly accurate multi range digital meter can often be had for a fiver, it would have to provide massive benefits.

I suspect that it will be one of those products that doesn't have to be technically better or cheaper than the alternative, but instead appeal to a market segment of people who like plugging things into their phones and running apps.
