The origin of the expression "taking the piss" stems from Tudor times when urine collected from the population of London was shipped up to Whitby in barrells for use in woollen mills.

The masters of the ships would be embarrassed at such a cargo and claim to be carrying Wine. When they were sussed out the answer would be "Bollocks your just taking the piss"

The good piddlers of London were paid a penny a bucket but a family of Red heads would be paid 1.5d as theirs was superior for some reason. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Urine also used to be collected for the creation of saltpetre, as used in gunpowder.

What is mouse urine called ?

Stella lager is associated more with cats than mice, [at least in Pompey].
The local police call it 'wife-beater'.

After weaving"Harris Tweed" was soaked in the"Piss" to soften the material and after washing and drying, the distinct aroma that was left in the cloth was much loved by the southern gentry. If you visited a Tweed weavers croft on the Isle of Harris you would be expected to Pee in the container at the entrance to the croft. It was of course the amonia contained in said piss that had the properties to work the material. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I spent a beautiful evening fishing, with a half bottle of golden rum, many years ago in the grounds of a croft on Harris. I did not use a bucket, the sea being closer, and paid £3 camping.

£3, for 6 of us, three tents and a Pinteree motors Ford transit. I got the distinct impression the crofter was delighted with his payment.
