Hi All,

Planning on giving the CAC's (intercoolers) a clean out this weekend.....

Have received a full set of seals etc for both from Keypart and was wondering if there are any hints or tips I should know before making a start?

Engines are AD31A's

Thanks
Rob

I did ours a while ago. Pretty straightforward job, to be honest. They were a bit oily at the inlet end so I sat them in a paint tray with a couple of ionches of petrol in and scrubbed with a paintbrush to loosen the word removedword removedword removedword removed. A second roller tray with fresh petrol to rinse and the job was done. Make sure all the petrol fumes have gone before you refit them, though...

I've done this on AD31A's and as Wiggo says is quite straight forward. The insert is quite heavy and pulling it out of the outer casing needs a bit of effort. I used gunk and hot water to clean the oil off the fins.
Strictly speaking you should do an air test on reassembly. I rigged up car radiator hoses and rubber bungs to make a test kit and presurised with a cycle pump. Without looking at the workshop manual think air test should hold 24PSI for 2 minutes.

You are giving these engines a thorough service!!

Hi Eddie,

Yep going through everything bit by bit!
Not pulled the injectors yet though as I'm going to wait to see exactly how she performs after the full service and tappets etc
If I'm not 100% happy then I'll get them out and serviced at the local Bosch diesel centre!
Cooling side of things is fine, but i'm guessing the induction side could do with a clean out and considering the seal kits are reasonable it makes sense!
Will send the pullers back with "grog" tokens when sorted! :)

Cheers
Rob

The air test only tests the wet side of the CAC to make sure water doesn't get into the inlet manifold with disastrous consequences. - 29PSI for one minute.
I suppose if it was ok before cleaning, provided you haven't kicked round the workshop it should be ok on reassembly.

Ta for that! I was wondering if I was leaking air out of it somewhere, but of course, it could only be going into the water system and that's more pressurised, I guess. Back to the drawing board.

Symptom: lazy engine, won't pull to max revs under load but slowly follows the other engine. Sometimes will work properly but only after a long run. Filters are all OK.

Bit of fred drift Wiggo but it could be prop related. I once had a problem like that and found damaged props on the side that got full revs. Concluded that the engine short of full revs was doing all the (or rather, more) work, and thus didn't achieve full revs.New props sorted it.

UPDATE

Well I'm pleased to say the job is done.....

Stripped the intercoolers on Saturday and they were a bit gungy!

Used plenty of gunk and a carefull going over with a pressure washer which brought them up a treat before refitting......

Main doughnut seal on the bottom of the starboard intercooler was damaged and looked to have been that way from a previous cleaning effort by someone!!

All back together and running fine with no leaks.....

All that remains is the oil and filters changing then give her a good run out to evaluate wether I need to do the injectors or not.

Thanks for all the advice.
Rob.
