intelligent GPS antenna for PC\'s

Does anyone know if any of the manufacturers have produced an intelligent WAAS GPS antenna that just plugs into a USB socket on a PC and removes the need for a stand alone GPS unit.

Any help much appreciated

Re: intelligent GPS antenna for PC\'s

I have just finished installing one of these (as in the previous post) in the last 10 minutes. I installed it(without trouble) on a Compaq tablet PC and am initially trying it out with the RYA charts that are now available.

It also came bundled with a Road Map thingy with voice instruction (female) all seems to work OK.. Will know more after the run home tonight.

When you say 'tablet PC' do you mean a hand held, like a palm pilot?

Well it works fine. The install process was only slightly confusing as opposed to the usual complet b****ks. You need to make sure that you know which com port has been assigned to the device by your PC operating system.

It works with the RYA charts in that it placed me in the middle of England on the worldwide chart.

The road navigator software also works well. The female voice is firm but fair. The best part is when you decide to take things into your own hands and ignore her instructions (not unreasonable on the way home from work). You get a very firm.

"You are lost"

"recalculating your route".

I bought it from this page.

Delivery was bang on time (went for the 24 hour option)

I actually called the company to get their advice on which one to purchase. They recomended this one because it works well XP. Some of the other competing devices actually register themselves as MICE. Veyr helpful on the phone and happy give advice and guidance.

A tablet PC is a small laptop device with a pen input screen as well as a full keyboard. Probably 3 times the size of a PDA. Runs a pretty standard version of XP. Battery life is good. I intend to use this device as a multi function email/internet/plotter/log/weather etc device on the boat, when it happens.
