Hi All,

Our new boat has the above installed.

Silly question but how do you use this system?

Do you have to have a separate Sky box and subscription to use it or is it just a fancy free view system.

Many thanks

Andy

Either - Sky Box or Freeview is needed.
IMHO the Intellian systems are much easier to use than the KVH Tracvision
The Raymarine ones are rebadged Intellian.
We have Raymarine/Intellian and they are working as well after 7 years as they were when they were new.

I use a Humax Foxsat box which can use both of your twin lnb outputs. If on a stable mooring, you can switch off the control box and still receive a picture using the lnb output that doesn't carry the 12v power. This saves battery and removes the electronic "whine" that the dish makes when in tracking mode.

Exactly what I do - I recon it saves on wear and tear as well.
I'm not sure that is possible with KVH systems though.
Intellian certainly works with the control box switched off.

We have two of these

Sky don't seem to like the idea of it being on a boat, so ours are in the pool house & only get used in summer, as they need waking up each season.

So, don't tell them.

They like it even less if it isn't in the UK or Ireland.

I've known people to phone them from Spain and say where they are - only to be immediately cut off!!
The best thing if you are outside the UK/Ireland, is to "play the game" - they get the subscription and we get the service.

BTW
they need waking up each season.
In fact, if you just leave it connected and switched on (receiving a signal) the box will eventually "reactivate" all your subscription channels.

Also
You should get all the BBC/ITV channels (if you are actually located within the UK) free anyway.

Ok, take sky for example, I phone em up and say "send me a box and a veiwing card".

Is it as simple as plug into the dish and away we go?

Sorry to sound like a doofus but this is all new to me

I have a friend who is a tv aerial rigger, got him to set mine up with line to satellites etc, I'm sure others DIY, which will become evident in posts to come. If not get a local household sky agent or something similar.

Do you have Sky at home? If yes then call them and say you're installing multiroom in sun lounge, tell them cabling was pre-wired and you just need box and card and will self install.

Sky multiroom costs £11.50 monthly and provide a copy of all channels available at your house.

But don't plug the Boat system in to Broadband (if you have 3G or 4G on boat), I'm sure they would figure out the Boat's broadband IP address if different to your house's broadband. In other words you can't have on-demand on the boat if you go this route.

If you don't have Sky at home you'll need to sign up to Sky and pay full price, but then you could plug in to boats 3G or 4G if you have it.

Edited to add, in the UK I had to set my Raymarine to track Astra2 satelite. Hudson marine (who installed box) also re-configured skew for UK. I think Skew adjustment is physical adjustment to dish, but I made tracking adjustment via the control box. When you switch on control box, what does it say on the LED display?

Hi anders, I know the guys at hudson so might ask them.

Haven't used the system yet as we do know take ownership until the end of the month.

Unfortunately we don't have sky at home so that's that route out.

If not sky then what does sat tv offer over Freeview?

I think advantage of sat over freeview is signal is better. The sat system tracks Satellite even when you're on move. If you're too far from terrestrial digital transmitter your picture will break up.

And you can buy boxes for freesat that allow programs to be recorded or paused like Sky box.
