Hi - I know this has been fairly recently covered but has anyone found a better or reasonable insurer other than top sail ?
My premium has gone up - I have been claim free for the last 5 years with Y Yacht which as we know is now topsail (funnily enough with a letter from the director like Y used to do)
Although it has gone up by only £100 it is more of principal than anything else - am I entering the scenario of being a loyal customer gets you screwed over as opposed to a new customer who seems to gain more for less £££.

any opinions welcomed
Jon

I was with GJW for many years when I had my boat, and found their quotes to be very competitive......though there are others on this forum who don’t rate them! ?

I've posted about my experiences here in the last month or so - I decided to do a detailed review of what was on offer this year, having been a Y customer for 4 years and noted ongoing price hikes.

Basic summary is I went with Pantaenius' new policy. They have deliberately changed their offering from an "all bells and whistles" policy (which is still available, at a price) to bring their standard policy more into line with everyone else. The only significant problem with it (if you term it such) is their 30% betterment clause. Personally, I accept that as being reasonable and not sufficiently different to the other players on the market (varying from 25% to 33.33%).

In the end, Pants offered me £4.29 per £1000 insured which I felt was reasonable for the product offered. Their original offer to me was £6.80 per £1000 insured, but they came down quickly when I explained what else I was being offered. They also reduced the excess to bring it into line with the market. All figures quoted are for the main policy only plus taxes only, not optional legal expenses etc. They weren't the cheapest by some margin but I felt their policy a reasonable one and held some regard for their reputation in dealing with claims (God forbid). If it makes any difference, I am the sort of person who sees insurance as a very last resort - and I wouldn't claim unless it were significant. That said, if I were to claim, I would expect good and honest service.

Do shop around, but understand what you are being offered - no two policies are the same, even if they are underwritten by the same company (usually N&G or Amlin).

I started with HKJ. Made a couple of claims, all dealt with very promptly. Was with Trafford for many years with the Azimut. Very competitive pricing, but never needed to make a claim.

I too was with Y/Topsail earlier this month, although the renewal was cheaper the policy had changed and no longer met my requirements. Topsail were very good in answering my questions and providing an alternative quote albeit more than last year. I would advise to check the policy very carefully as I found a few things I didn't like. In the end I found a better policy with Curtis Marine and they were very helpful and easy to deal with, and with their discount it came in almost half what I paid last year, a great result.

Edit: It is better to call Curtis for a quote, their online system is limited to one type of policy, whereas by phone it is not.

Try Curtis Marine - mention that you post on the YBW forums and they should give you a discount.
Any discount will be specific to your case but I know several people who are pleased with Curtis.
Curtis is just a broker like others but they do seem to be fair and give their best offers at the start - i.e. don't wait until they are hit by other offerings.
IMO, that a good sign of a broker who should be looking after YOU
