Insurance

What is the average price I should be looking at for 35ft boat £40000 please.

Depends on too many factors such as where you keep the boat and your chosen cruising area. The only way to find out is to get 3 or 4 quotes. Ignore the %age of insured value as it is meaningless - particularly when somebody suggests figures that would give a premium between £400-1200!

If the boat is marina based with the normal Brest -Elbe area, and a good claim record would think you should get a premium under £400. My 33' and £105K value is £408, but I have an almost unblemished record with only 2 claims in 40 years, last one in 1987. I am currently with Y Insurance, but have paid similar premiums in the past with Bishop Skinner.

Thanks for replies I just don't want to be ringing or filling forms in and then to be inundated with correspondence, I retire from current employment in next month or so and will be actively looking just wanted to have a ball park figure to work on .

while not worth £40k my boat which has been valued at £20k is insured fully comp with outboard at £110 pa with GJW, excellent insurance co. Im paying the same as i did for my previous 22ft yacht and thats including a claim i did for 2k 4 years ago.

Get a quote from here: http://www.craftinsure.com/index.asp
you need a very bare level of info for a quick quote, not even any personal details. Just a bit about the boat and its value etc. I insure with them and don't think they have ever sent me anything other than renewal info, so I doubt you will be inundated, even if you take it further and give them your details.

I hope it is ok to piggyback this post. I am due renewal insurance; what is the stance regarding surveys these days. I have the impression that for cheap old boats< £25k that surveys are not now requested - is this correct?

Read the small print!!

I have taken insurance out, with no request or conversation regarding surveys, only to read the small print later and see a clause that says my boat needs a survey due to age. Most companies will let you red the policy before buying.

There isn't an average, it will depend on the area kept, area to be sailed, summer in water or all year in use, swing mooring or marina, your experience, etc. There will also be a difference in price between an "agreed value" policy and one which pays out what insurers feel is the value if lost, which will be lower.

You will need to to shop around and Y Yacht would be a good start. Don't worry about being pestered with phone calls and emails, it's not the household insurance market.

If you want to get insurance to suit your requirements at the best price, you have to do the legwork. It is not onerous nor time consuming. Just make sure you read the policy as they are not all the same.

As I said you will get your ball park figure for your particular requirements with 3 or 4 quotes from the major players. Or you can follow the advice already given to try Y Yacht Insurance which many of us here use as providing the best policy and are generally competitive. However you owe it to yourself to get alternative quotes specific to you rather than rely on what blokes on the internet say.
