Hello, boat insurance due, have been with same insurers for about 7 years, have made no claims, but for whatever reasons they have passed me on to another firm, who require an out of water survey, which obviously will be costly, [boat is 1972 Ocean 30] last survey was when boat was purchased [2005] So,what i am asking is can anyone tell me who i could try who wouldn't need a survey?cheers Dave.

NavGen didn't ask me for one!?

They did for me!

I have said it before on these here fora. Don't always expect the insurance company to actually ask. Sometimes it is written in the small print along the lines of: for any vessel over x years the policy holder will have in their possession a survey not more than 5 years old. If it's in there and you don't have one I imagine the insurance company will point out the error of your ways should you ever need to claim. (not saying that N&G have this in the policy wording, but some do)

Every so often insurers "review" their choosen market and will decide not to take on certain areas of the market, mainly cos not profitable and may be older boats are seen as too high a risk by them. Most insurers do ask for a recent survey before accepting you business.
A previous insurer(CRAFTINSURE) just wanted to know if a survey was available but would not cough up if it could not be produced at time of claim,my present insurer (SAGA) wanted to see survey up front. My boat is well over 30 years old.
Cannot see that a few hundred pounds or so spent on a survey ever 5/10 years is a bad thing, both for you and the boaters around you.
