Gentlemen, is there such a thing as a GOOD Insurance company serving the boating fraternity? I am experiencing one hell of a problem with mine and as renewal is comming up I just can't afford to through more money down the drain on a policy that materialises into nothing when you need the cover most.

Cheers

When you say a 'good' insurance company it depends how 'good' is interpreted.

Like most insurance cover you don't know how good they are intil you make a claim.

We were involved in a fairly serious collision some years ago with a racing yacht who later denied responsibility.

Thankfully the insurance co. persued the claim and as well as getting full recompense for the repairs also managed about £1500 in out of pocket expenses etc.

The Company is AXA via Moody brokerage.

I haven't tried getting quotes from elsewhere, I prefer to stick with who you know.

Hope this helps.

Re: Pantaenius.

This is a company who seem to ask the right questions, and really understand underwriting and yachties requirements. I have not had a claim yet. Most importantly they appear to be flexible in their requirements and not dogmatic. for example, I bought in holland - using a dutch surveyor - the other UK insurers were insisting on a recognised UK surveyor.

Re: Pantaenius.

Add my name to the Pantaenius fans. Five years of excellent service for Europe and Mediterranean. One claim paid without question and minimum fuss. I am glad to be able to recommend them

Aetna Insurance

I think many insurers could take a lesson from Morgan the bankers. Their origins were in insurance in New York. Joseph Morgan was the main shareholder in Aetna Insurance Co.

In December 1835 a fire started in Wall St and, because of the cold, the mains water system was frozen. The Great Merchants Exchange and most of Broad Street were burned down with damage estimated (1835 values) of $15million.

Most of the insurers refused to pay, invoking the fine print, faulty city administration, poor construction, inadequate fire administration etc.
Joseph Morgan on the other hand adopted a no quibble policy ( almost bankrupting the company in the proceeds).

However because of their honesty and perceived business ethics they cornered thereafter the insurance market. This was the one single event that could be identified as launching Morgan as one of the great financial institutions.

A lesson for others...?

While I am digressing about Morgan:

J Pierpoint Morgan would grant loans if, on interviewing a candidate, he followed his hunch about the person. Even $I million at that time. An antitrust commission implied that this was a peculiar way to do business and Morgan agreed but said it was HIS method.

What? No forms to fill in? No credit committee to review loan? No security to provide ? ( which if one had one probably wouldn't need the loan anyway..) No civil servant of a banker who could say ( as they have done in the past to me " Great idea - but I'm not going to support it, because if it doesn't work I risk losing my job but if it does, I am not going to get any benefit from it...)

Am I getting old?

Re: Bishop Skinner

Bishop Skinner were brilliant when I made a claim. All I had to do was post off a cheque for the excess and they did the rest.

It would be nice to know the name of your present insurers. If I had poor service I would want everyone to know so it hit them hard.

Re: Bishop Skinner

I too have had no problems with Bishop Skinner - I currently have a claim that is not causing any hassle (even if the boat yard didn't send a typed quote...!)
