I have the impression that for low value boats (20-25K} that insurers have foregone the survey every 10 years stance, but is that correct? I have not had a survey since 2007 [mid 70,s GRP cat) and it would not be convenient to be requested for one now. How are others doing with survey requirement frequency from their insurers?
 
Last year I was asked for a survey, explained how difficult it was to do during lockdown and was it really necessary. They responded with a list of areas to photograph on my boat which were sent to the underwriters who approved and agreed no survey required.

Have you contacted your insurance company and asked about their requirements?
 
I am not sure reminding them my last survey was 14 years ago is a good idea!

Always found it is best to be up front and honest with them. All documented so that should anything happen you both are under no misapprehension about where you stand. On talking to my insurance company I was surprised to learn that I was only insured for 12 nm offshore unless "on passage". Had I been 15 miles offshore and something happened then they would quite rightly say they were not covering me.
 
Mine won’t insure it “fully comp” without a survey and all items listed as needing remedy being done. £10k boat. They‘re fine with 3rd party.

I have no intention of deceiving or misleading my insurers, who have always been very good to me but I would rather avoid the cost of a survey as well as the substantial inconvenience in getting it done. My boat is well maintained in all respects and I have no doubts about its safety and seaworthyness.
I was just interested in others survey request frequency from their insurers.

I suppose you would most probably be on passage to somewhere unless you decided to sail 13 miles offshore and then return to your starting point.

I have no issue with an independent set of eyes looking over my work, they may pick up something I've missed. A bit of pride when they find zero defects or advisories in my book.

Would you consider missing an MOT just to save some cash?

At a cost of £5-600 for a survey, a 500 mile round trip to the boat, 5 days of my life I will not get back, £600 for a lift out/in and the scost of a few yard days to be told what I already know, my boat is ok. You will understand why I am not keen.
An MOT is a legal obligation so missing it is not an option, a totally different situation as well you know.
