Insurance State Laws - USA

Hello all,

I'm currently writing an article on boat insurance and have come across a conflict of information some companies are saying some states do require boat insurance and some are saying no states require boat insurance unless it's third party and required by the marina, or governing body of water.
If someone could clear this up that would be great? I'm aware that a boat certificate is sometimes required sate depding but insruance?

A few people here will probably have some scraps of information, but really you'd be better off asking on a US boating forum rather than a British one.

Sailing Anarchy is the one I know, but I'm sure there are plenty of others.
