Could anyone recommend a decent insurance company/policy? Finally taken the 'plunge' and bought a Quicksilver 640 SD, it's brand new... well a 2010 model, so it should be a fairly standard policy - we get our hands on the boat in a week's time - we'd better get a move onto insure it:confused: I suppose. Cheers AS

Congratulations AS. Please post piccy's when you get your hot and sticky's on her.

Rafiki is insured with Haven KJ. Has worked very well for us, including a claim. No quibbling, just settled up with min fuss.

My first year too i went with Velos for my Quicksilver- same price as Craft insure- naturally cant vouch for claim handling yet - thank goodness!!!!

H K-J generally have a good reputation. However, I've had a bad experience with them and wouldn't use them if they were the last insurance company left on Earth.

Whoever you insure with, read the policy small print...... :(

You will only find out how good your insurance company is when you have to make a claim and of course by then it is too late.

I agree you need to read the small print of the policy carefully and if buying through a broker I would get them to describe clearly to you exactly the policy covers you for and perhaps more importantly, what it doesn't.

Thanks all, you've certainly been helpful - I will be investigating them all this week. I checked out the Knox-Johnston one the other eve, but found the questionnaire a bit odd. We will be keeping our boat on a trailer in a secure marine boatyard - it didn't seem to give that as an option. But as I've said - we're still newbies so will need to investigate some more. I checked out the RYA earlier today where it mentioned insurance. I'm thinking of joining thre RYA - hope that's a good thing?

Cheers, AS

AS, you might check who others use locally to you at Newhaven. Sometimes local service makes a significant difference.

Craftinsure very easy to to apply and pay for...............However...........
Claims procedure is NOT and just as you would expect from an insurance company not only do they look for a loop hole they have ay least 1 engineer who misrepresents what he is told by the repairer, either that or they ignore his report!!

I overheated due to picking up a plastic bag on my outdrive in a lock, I know it was a plastic bag because I removed it, the damage caused by this was covered by my fully comp policy, however the conclusion by craftinsure was as the mechanic who carried out repairs found NO cause for the overheat it could not have been a blockage of the water intake. This is of cause a contradiction however after months of emails they have decided to close the file leaving me to pick up the bill of just over £1300.

Thanks craftinsure!!!

Oh yes when I informed them I will have to change insurance companies due to the fact I have been accused of trying to misrepresent my claim I was advised to cancel my direct debit otherwise it would renew automatically!!

I really should have known better, you get what you pay for!!

Navigators and general have been faultless with me. Over £10k claim two years ago following striking submerged object off Margate (no, not the bottom!) was dealt with very quickly and efficiently.even paid for transport back to Windsor when I found a chap who could repair cheaper than at Ramsgate.

We use Towergate Marden. We've been with them since the beginning, had 1 claim with no hastle whatsoever. We have stuck with them because we find their customer service very good. Hope thats of some help.

Many thanks all, but my partner went off and found his own.... not based on your recommendations :( - don't think I'll mention what it is in case some of you have had bad experiences with the co. Willl just go and bite my nails!!!

However. yesterday was launch day for our little lady - we were so lucky with the weather, but it was a bit choppy. Can't believe how much we've got to learn, luckily we had one of the sales guys come out with us for a few hours to show us the ropes. Dreading the mooring process on our own - bit scary!!!
