Insurance recommendations please

Re: Insurance Cos to avoid recommendations - here goes ...

Newton Crum who actually employed a Surveyor without my knowledge to check my boat after its second claim in a year ... he gave its the thumbs down verdict and then I had a fight to get things put right .... I wouldn't mind so much if I knew about the intended survey .... actually survey is a joke for it - it was plain and simple "Getting out of it Loss Adjusting" .... I got my just decision in the end and a re-survey showing the rubbish they went to ....
Their attitude was completely devoid of assistance to their client - ME ... it was totally in favour of the Underwriter and his whims ...
They say you buys cheap, pays dear ..... Aye - I'll second that ...

When Newton Crum told me that after paying out they would no longer entertain my cover - I asked them where they got the idea that I wanted to stay with them !!!

I see that NC are back trading again .......... NOT with me I can add .....

I have had good deals with : Giles, KC Powell and of course Basic Boat who actually KC Powell prompted to me when I explained circumstances and needs .... but I will go back to KC Powell when and if my circumstances etc. change.

I just reread the Saga endorsements and it says: During the period 1 Dec to 31March when not in use the vessel must be kept ashore or in a marina. Not too onerous for us as this is winter refit time, but I will try Bishop Skinner next time, some companies don't like cats, seem to think we spend most of our time upside down!!

Re: Insurance Cos to avoid recommendations - here goes ...

A couple of years ago we had a laser stolen from our car park.
we had cctv coverage a witness (neighbour) some evidence left behind.
Newton crumbly sent an assessor to visit / view, at the time swmbfh was ill and aleep (she had the policy in her name)
and the 'assessor' was reluctant for me to disturb her -'' no its alright -let her be''
Despite the obvious evidence at hand -including police report-
A week later we received a note stating something like ''with miss xxxx's reluctance to meet with the assessor and the dubious conditions of 'apparent theft' we have no choice but to refund your fee and decline you insurance.''
I could not beleive what was put to us and promptly did my best to alleviate this company from my many friends thoughts at re-insure time, at my local sailing centre. a solicitor inferred that to pursue this in court would be fruitless as the claim was for the hull only and it was only for £800.
Four months later at grafham I spotted my hull with a new coat of paint and subsequently went through the motions of recovery. -- Snooping everywhere I saw a laser and checking the boat i.d. no.'s under the bow fairlead finally paid off, led to the 'new owner' had bought the boat at a boat jumble in essex a month earlier, with spars and sail (no number) for £1200 -poor sod lost that.
But so much for Crumb, eh!

My sympathy 100%

Having been at the end of Newton Crums telephone manner and their conniving way to get the underwriter of the hook .... complete reverse of when I first insured with them .... quotes about the Hurricane and NC being the best payer out of claims, no hassles, fair premium etc. etc. .... I would never ever consider even thinking about using them ever again.

Of course when I complained to relevant authorities etc. they couldn't do anything as NC had issued letters covering - passed it to underwriters etc. etc. who of course do not want to speak to low-lifes like us ... it's all by fax.

Newton Crum - not again !

Re: Newton Crum

Back in my dinghy sailing days I had a cheap policy with Newton Crum, which ended up costing me significantly more when I made a claim. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif It appears that most dinghy sailors insure with Noble Marine because of their efficiency and fairness when it comes to paying claims.

Needless to say, I have insured my dinghies and my current Sadler with Nobles ever since. I made one claim three years ago for a broken mast and damaged mainsail, and true to their word, I was sailing again the following weekend.

IMHO you get what you pay for!
