I recently recieved my renewal quote from Nav & Gen. £247 for all the usual, 12 months in commission, cross channel cover etc. out of idle curiosity I contacted Haven Knox-Johnson, same details etc. £100 cheaper. Intrigued, I contacted GJW, again same details £110 cheaper then Nav&Gen. Like for like cover.

I phoned Nav & Gen to ask if there had been a mistake and a bored sounding young man offered to 'knock' £20 off!

I guess the concept of customer inertia is true! They just hope we will stick with what we know and pay the asking price! I have been with Nav & Gen for many years, since dinghy sailing days. So much for looking after your customers.

So, save a few quid and shop around before renewing!

I routinely change my house insurance ...... to the same company, but via a new quote from a price comparison site! I save £10-£20 ; the price comparison outfit gets its commission. Crazy, but if they want to play games then I will too. (I have tried the 'phoning up' approach but found it more hassle than simply taking a new policy).

If you have an older boat, do check survey requirements (if any) and take that into account along with price.

+1 for Y Yacht insurance. It is the same this year as it was last. The days are now over for having any kind of loyalty towards insurance companies or any business for that matter. Do you honestly think they give a rats arse whether you stay with them or not. Tesco have found this out the hard way.
Rant over.

Asked Y Yacht for a quote. Cheers.

I'm afraid insurance companies do not reward loyalty anymore. I do price comparison every year. Recently renewed my house insurance and saved over 100£ by switching. When I rang the old company to cancel, they asked why and I told them. They replied that they could have done something o the price if I'd contacted them before switching. I replied that they had had there chance when sending out their renewal notice. Grrrrrrrrrr

I started out with Navigators & Gen two years ago...it seemed expensive, so I phoned around last year, and GJW were much, much cheaper. I changed over and didn't bother to question their renewal quote for the coming 12 months - paid up quite happily, yesterday.

In the process of changing insurance on the wife's dog van at the moment. Co-Op, who we've been with for years, wanted £600 renewal. Ageaus offered £300 for same cover!

The Co-Op are in deep do do at the moment, and management still have not worked out how to run a business.

you should have rung them up first as a new customer & got a quote . Once you knew it was cheaper ( you could even try to do a deal) you could then tell them you are already a customer & they can look up the no claims there & then. If is dearer then just ring off & renew on the renewal form at the lower rate

I have used GJW for a while & this year i had a £6K claim & I can have nothing but absolute praise for their service, they even paid a contribution for my wife coming to Scotland to collect me whilst boat was repaired.
I shall possibly suffer on the renewal but , hey, if they pay up then its worth it to sleep at night

Direct Line provide excellent house and contents insurance at a very competitive price, but only to new customers. I've been with them for five years now, or more accurately, one year five times. I rang last year and was told that they were thinking of introducing a customer loyalty discount. However, they couldn't tell me when or how much it might be. So, I cancelled again and started a new policy for £80 less. Barking mad....

incidentally, I also have only good things to say would GJW. Small increase in premium and nice people to deal with.

Like others I have had only positive experiences with GJW...BUT they do not cover consequential loss - this was explicitly confirmed in correspondence with them and so, after 10 years as a satisfied customer, I made the move to Y.

Right. Thanks you for the recommendations. GJW SEEM THE BEST BET. Y were competitive but wanted a survey and as Rose is afloat until mid summer I could not provide one.

Amazing that enough customers must simply renew year after year without checking to make Nav & Gens (and many others) business model work. Those customers they lose must be more than compensated for by those that just cough up.

Anyway, I have saved enough for a new starter battery :)

Would that not only be necessary if the boat was used to earn money, i.e. chartered out?

Interesting that a simple survey done on here about a year ago showed around 50% of those who responded favoured GJW. That surprised me enough to inquire and, after a couple of conversations, I accepted their more than reasonable ( modest ) quote and ( few ) conditions.

Unless you've already committed elsewhere, might I suggest you inquire again at GJW, ask to speak with the ever-helpful and very professional Janet Morrison, and draw her attention to this and the previous thread....? It seems there's usually a way around 'sticking points', if you ask, and a little to be shaved off each premium.... :D

I've found GJW to have quite reasonable premiums, clear conditions and good service. They have performed well when I have claimed which is most important. Cheap premiums are nice but not if you find you're not covered if you have to claim.

No, it means that if a skin fitting fails due to insufficient maintenance and the boat is lost you get nothing. Y & Pantaenius don't cover the skin fitting but will pay out on the rest of the boat.
