In a spare 10 minutes a couple of weeks ago I filled in an on-line form for a quote just to see if it might be cheaper than Y Insurance, who I'm with at the moment and very happy with. Just checking proposed premiums really. 40ft Beneteau, 2 x D4-300s etc.
Company was called M.S.Amlin who I've never heard of.
Had a reply last week with a quote for €980 which = £815 ish.
Had another quote today, same details, same proposed policy number, same cover etc ...... £1370. ..... Eh? ...

It is not clear from your post how much Y were, and Amlin and another unknown.

I have been with Nautical Insurance for 12 years ( Navigators and General policy).

They wanted £1450 on my S58.

There were docs on board the boat that showed the last owner - via Navigators and General was paying £1950.

I got a quote from Y and it was £957

No prizes for guessing who it is covered with.

Both quotes were from Amlin ... Y charge me £750 odd and I've no intention of changing ... just wanted to see what another company might charge ... the point was, and I thought I'd made it obvious, that I had 2 completely different quotes from the same company and even with the same proposed policy number!

Give or take some minor FX variation, the cheaper price is 60% of the higher price, which suggests to me that the insurer was expecting you to follow up with something to get the 40% discount, maybe proof of qualifications or experience, or no claims bonus?

Just renewed with Y - less than last year and as previously debated on here the policy is one of the best. Only claim I have ever made in some 16/17 years of boating was dealt with promptly and effectively. All in all not much to think about :)

I am also with Y and happy with the premium and cover but I was more impressed with the speed and efficiency they dealt with a recent claim. At Christmas I had all my nav gear stolen, plotter, instrument displays, auto pilot, about €7k in total. The process was speedy, efficient and fair.

I'm just renewing another year with Y. In my view their service remains excellent and the policy wording remains best in class. Good value premium. No hesitation for me. My brother = the same with his boat.

Crikey, I pay less than that for COMMERCIAL insurance, albeit in Ireland.

Granted this is for a 37ft Cranchi Smeraldo with 2 x KAD300's
