My good friend has a 28 foot 1964 McGruers Lorne class mahogany sloop. her insurance premium seems a bit high to me. The value on the proposal £26k and the premium is close to £400. My plastic French 2005 34 foot boat is circa 2.5 times the value and the premium is lower. My question is: is this normal, are wooden boats more expensive to insure?

I pay £320 on a £30K hull value, provides unlimited single handed and racing (although I only do a couple of races a year) contents and legal cover.

Not necessarily more expensive. My 1963 boat with a value of £13k costs £186 with bishop Skinner. Had a similar quote from Y Insurance who insure my other plastic boat with a value of £110k for £380.

Suggest your friend tries Y Insurance. Simon Winter is another specialist worth trying.
