Hi all,

Just looking at changing the current boat to then sail across the Atlantic next November (traditional ARC route but not as part of the ARC) and been getting insurance quotes.

So, the boat we want is year 1990 and value about 140K GBP, 2 of us sailing, both experienced and sailed UK to Canaries on our own etc.

So, just had one quote come back at almost £3000 for the year, and will need a full out of water survey. Is this high? Currently we are paying about £800 GBP for the year to sail the Canaries and the Azores and Madiera etc

Any recommendations for insurance companies?

Thanks

DTD

Hello, based on our recent experience it's the right ballpark. We were with Admiral (who have been EXCELLENT) and also obtained quotes from Pants and Y Yacht.

Premium is higher because:
- greater risk of total loss, noting that recovery in event of (e.g., ) rudder failure or dismasting is much harder than when coastal / offshore.
- greater risk of severe weather when beyond the 4-5 day reach of a weather forecast ==> damage to rigging, gooseneck, spreaders etc
- greater chance of needing out-of-the-way repairs with shipping costs and specific labour (which may require flights and hotels).

I changed to Topsail when my previous insurer insisted on 3 people being aboard for long trips, even though we have wind vane steering and autopilot. I’ve had excellent service from Topsail - especially when changing cruising areas - although I haven’t had to make a claim which is the real test. Incidentally, I believe Topsail now administer the portfolio previously with Y Yacht.

Currently with Topsail and waiting to hear back from them but think it will be the Atalantic crossing and the Caribbean part that will add a load of money to the premium.

We want to change boats and cross the Atlantic (ideally just the 2 of us, although they may insist on a 3rd person etc ) so think we are going to have to pay for the privilege!

Try Pantaneus. We are insured with a guaranteed value of £130k. Caribbean/Atlantic cover is £2300. Pro rata so only £750 in UK as far as Algarve then prorata for extension to cross pond. We leave Canaries on Sunday

@davethedog you could perhaps also try Insurers on the other side of the Atlantic, like Massy United here in Barbados -
Yacht and Pleasure Craft Insurance | Massy United Insurance
Although I doubt that they will better Geem's premium of £2,300 - but it might still be worthwhile asking.

@geem if Barbados is your first port of call in the new world, please do give me a shout if you need any local info or help.

We are planning on Antigua. We will kite surf at Green Island for the winter. No plans to cruise around the islands due to too much testing and hassle. We hope next year is better
