I saw a YouTube video where an American that specialised in marine law was discussing insurance claims and why they were not paid out.
One was for around $85,000 for written off engine/s. Cause was jelly fish blocking water intakes. It was deemed lack of maintenance.
There were many other that were equally surprising.

I guess I thought Concept Special Risks was pretty widely used in the UK.

But i'm looking elsewhere now.

Never heard of them. Big players in UK are N&G, HJK, Admiral, GJW, Bishop Skinner, Pantaenius plus loads of brokers and smaller players. Looking at the website you linked to they seem to be aiming at US market with UK underwriter as a "hook". The US market is well known for poor insurance practices with sweeping exclusions. It is not nationally regulated but by State although insurers can operate nationally outside the state of regulation.

Marine life is a big exclusion. “ it wasn’t the rocks that damaged your boat it was the barnacles “

I once had to clear jelly fish out of the engine water strainer, fortunately not the stinging varieties but still unpleasant. Had motored into an area that was more small transparent jelly fish than sea water. It could easily happen with these varieties, or just one of those horrible big reddish ones.
Hardly a regular maintenance item though.
