Hi All,

I'm setting sail tonight, well, tomorrow morning at 0130, and I don't have any insurance. Nav & Gen are refusing to insure me beyond 12 miles offshore, because my boat isn't bigger than 23 feet. A bit annoying since a Mcgreggor would qualify and mine is a far safer sea boat, but ho hum.

Pantenius were very helpful, but they can't do anything since I don't have a survey.

I need insurance, and I need it today.

Can anybody recommend a company that might be able to help.

No survey
30 miles or above offshore.
Boat is valued at 5k
Would like contents insurance too to cover my laptops and cameras.

I think I may struggle here.

is it worth a quick call to Day Melon's office to see if they can recommend someone ? They have experience of small boats round the UK, methinks.

Just a thought, but is 12 miles a big problem?

I would have thought that your personal effects (Laptop etc) would be most at risk when moored, and the boat itself when aproaching the coast........all within 12 miles. Not to say that no risks above 12 miles (esp. from shipping and weather) but for that you would effectively self insure.

No doubt the more insurance minded will tell me that wouldn't work :(, but an idea that could also lower your premium.

Just to tie this up...

I accepted the quote from Mercia Marine. It was a touch more than my Nav & Gen renewal, but not by much, and they added a good few things to the policy. I now have a 25 mile limit, as opposed to 12 miles, and a more suitable valuation for the boat. They were lovely to deal with, very personal and indeed, quite interested in what I was doing.

Obviously I hope not to experience claiming through them, but I'm so far very impressed with their service, so there's a recommendation from me.

Thanks for all teh replies in this thread. Everything is now sorted, so it's just a case of a final tidy of the boat, and away I go at silly o'clock tomorrow morning. :)
