I am in the unexpected position of have TWO quotes for my proposed bluewater cruise, from Pantaenius and from Admiral. Both will allow me to cross the oggin with just the two of us (Mrs J and me) and in all other respects, there are swings and roundabouts but the two quotes are pretty much of a muchness and I am having great trouble deciding which to go for....... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Does anybody have anything AGAINST either of these companies? If you are worried about the laws of libel etc., perhaps you would be kind enough to send me a PM.

Thanks,

Paul.

I like pantaenius, therey have covered me for years and been very good when I had a claim. Plus they insure my brother and were also very good about a claim. The only way I can split insurance companies is how they behave when you need to make a claim. Dont know admiral.

A friend of mine is a commercial ship surveyor. He wanted to insure his own boat, so he went into the calims department of his firm and said 'who pays up?'. 'Panteaneus!' came the universal cry. That was good enough for him. And me. Been with them 5 years and no complaints so far - no big claims though .....

No experience of Admiral but have used Pantaenius on two different large yachts and they were excellent. Only claims we ever made were against a crew medical policy but everything settled without any fuss in swift order.

Hi Paul,

Did you check GJW?
I have been with them for a couple of years. Had a "large" claim 2 months ago (£6,000). Everything was over and done with in five (yes, 5!) weeks. Claim assessed & approved, boat fixed & yard paid.
It doesn't get much better than this, I think.

No connection to GJW - just a satisfied customer.

We had excellent service from GJW - really helpful with a couple of claims, including one which nearly went to court. The initial reason for changing to Pantaenius was that GJW require a survey periodically (? 5 yrs). However when we were considering changing as Pan's premiums increased astronomically post 9/11 I discussed longer term cruising plans with both companies. Pan were much much more flexible so we decided to stick with them.

I also understand that there is a significant difference in the way Pan and other insurers (certainly our previous ones - St Margarets & GJW) assess the value of your boat (heaven help you if you do have a total write-off but I think it's an important point) - Pan's valuation is fixed - if your boat were written off tomorrow then the price they'd pay is the valuation. Whereas my understanding of our previous policy was that the insured value would be subject to depreciation - and at the end of the day negotiaion. But that's only my take on it - if anyone knows better I'd be pleased to hear.

I have no connection with either insurance company other than being a customer. Nor do I have any experience of Admiral - sorry.

Thank you for your responses, the balance seem to be in favour of Pantaenius..... Thanks also for the other suggestions but the reason it was down to these two companies is simply that these are the only two that would allow me to sail with just two crew. All the others required a third crew member.

Paul.

I have been with Admiral for 3 years, crossing with ARC2002 and have no complaints at all. Having said that... I've never made a claim. That, of course, is the time when you find out what an insurer is really like.

One indication about them is that my premium hardly went up at all this year, even though Jeannius is a charter cat, in the water, in the hurricane belt, in season.

Pantaenius wouldn't insure me. Admiral would.
