Instrument/switch panel material

As I'm replacing some kit at the chart table and the new stuff is smaller and a different shape, I'm looking to cover the 'ole and provide a nice smart background to the new kit. Ideally, I'd like to use the matt black material that seems to be used for switch panels, instrument panels and similar but what's it called please?

Ideally, I'd use it on its own if it's stiff enough but I could mount it on a wooden backing if required. I don't need a lot (from memory, about 150mm x 300mm should do it) so any suggestions of a source would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

I came across this very old post and I’m sure you’ve moved on but just in case someone else is looking for the same thing…

in Australia it’s called “switch panel”. If phenolic backing. Essentially it’s the material that is used as a backing for Plastic laminates like Formica and Laminex. It also used to be used for circuit boards (hence the name) and is similar to the old plastic from the 1950s called Bakelite (used for radios, jewellery, etc). It’s made from layers of Kraft paper soaked in phenolic resin. Matt black, Super durable, very stiff, quite heavy. It comes in sheets (though can be hard to source) and can be worked fairly easily with modern tools (and lots of bits!).
I’m an architect and I love the stuff as it’s got a lot of range of character due to the process. I use it for a range of finishes including the cabinet doors per attachedphoto. They’re 16mm thick and have been routed vertically and with a finger pull across the top.

You’d probably have to pay through the nose but the Marine Team guys at MYH either have or can get what you’re after. They replaced an entire panel on Arcarius when we had new kit put in and it looks very smart.
