I´ve just changed boats to a small motor cruiser. She isn´t exactly young, nor is most of the equipment and none of it has manuals. most of it is straight foreward but I can´t get aline on the autopilot.
There are 3 bits; the motor which drives an ally wheel by a belt, this is labeled "Autohelm 3000 ", then there is a large round gimbled lump labeled "Nautech" which has the remains of a compass rose on top which can be turned. Finally there´s what looks like a remote control which has an old type jack plug which goes into the bottom of the Nautach bit.
Anybody out there know what I´m talking about and how to work it? It seems to power-up OK

You have a very old Autohelm 3000 - long out of production. Nautech is the name of the original company, now Raymarine, that invented the device. The dome shaped bit is a fluxgate compass which you use for choosing your desired heading. The control will turn the power on to the motor to tell it to steer to the chosen heading. Probably the motor is on a bracket with a pin that allows you to move it to engage the drive belt to the wheel. Raymarine in Fareham may have somebody who knows about them!

Waking this thread up after 10 years. I have got a boat with that unit, it was working fine until a couple of days ago. The control unit has developed a fault, as I have 2 working tiller units I was hoping someone could furnish me with more information.

has anyone got the diagrams that explain how to take the control unit apart to see if I can find the fault.

There is a screw under a bit of plastic on the control knob. This will allow remo al of the knob. Under the knob are 2 screws that allow the unit to split. I will check later as the unit is in my garage gathering dust .... whether it works I can't remember as I have a much newer unit now.

Thank you for a brilliantly quick response that’s the one, I have.

It was working fine for 10 or so days then it started operating the ram slowly on auto (compass ie when in autopilot mode).
When using over ride switches it works fine, it’s just slow on compass to slow for it to be useable.

I have phoned raymarine but they said no we have no information.

I maybe back to ask more I am no. Electrician.

Thanks guys a couple of loose connections found and it’s now working. Not sea trialled in this weather but seems to work on the mooring.

If anyone is going to gash one of these please post up with a spare tiller arm I hope to keep mine going a whilst longer…
