Is there a technical name for those metal ratchets, used to tighten narrow webbing straps round pallets of stock, etc?

I just saw Youtube footage of a boat using webbing and a ratchet, for its vang. Granted, it'd be necessary to avoid catastrophic overtightening, but aside from the very cheap & cheerful appearance, is there a good reason not to use these?

They're certainly powerful and robust enough, and the webbing could be indelibly marked with positions to suit Beaufort forces.

how would you propose dumping it in a hurry then

Initially it sounds a good idea as you can tighten it easily, pushing forward on the ratchet can "dump it" but easing it off just a little might cause problems. I think the ratchet only works one way.

Also, I may be missing something but why would you want to mark a vang for Beaufort forces?

I don't think they are really suitable for marine use, certainly not in a fairly critical application. I do use some to hold our dinghy down to the coachroof, but the ratchets tend to get gummed up with salt, and can be awkward to release sometimes. Need regular cleaning and lubrication.

I would not want/need to release one in a hurry.

SS ratchet straps

We use two SS ratchet straps for holding the inflatable on the Foredeck when we leave the boat, bought them from a MOBO shop on-line, used for holding jet-ski's onto trailers. I found them using Google. When you release them they go with a Bang, no control at all.
