INSTALLING WINDLASS

I am in the process fitting a windlass and a recent article in PBO said connect to domestic battery but the Lemar instructions say to the starter battery. I would think a cranking battery would be a better than the deep cycle one. There is also conflicting information of the size of cable.
Any thoughts

Most set ups have the larger battery for engine starting, as this will provide more power to the winch it would seem to be the natural choice. The trap here is that using the winch without the engine running may cause problems when starting (low battery), so if you make it a rule that the engine is started then the winch you should have no problems.
If the cable size is a worry you can do the calculation, I had a set of welding leads to mine for years without a problem, so big is best when it comes to high loads.
