installing a water heater - series or parallel?

So move the Eberespacher down to the other end of your diagram, in an alongside position to that of the "engine" and fit a couple of "Y" (diverter) valves so that the engine and the Ebers...er are connected each to an arm of each "y" (Outlet & inlet) and the leg of each "Y" is connected to either side of your water circuit.

The engine doesn't need either but the Eberspusher(thingy) would be best served if the valve switched to it's output when the heater started and it would also be better to have an expansion vessel of some type. I believe that these units already incorporate a small accumulator device already though. The valve neds to be a 12volt motorised one which opens when the heater is fired up.

Actually, if you did away with Y valve #2 and just put a tee connector in there instead, it would still work and you would'nt need a second expansion tank as the engine one would serve for both, still being in circuit.**

**NO. Second thoughts, fit both and fully isolate the auxillary water heater when it's not in use. That way all the components connected to the engine will be assured of being able to take the pressure. You don't want some seal or blow-off valve in the Eberspacher loosing your cooling water at some vital motoring moment - the respective operating pressures of the engine and the Ebs'p'er are likely to be widely different.

Kindly don't be offensive. Not ALL engines have a by-pass around the thermostat like the dreaded rubber pipe on a BMC A series or even a seperate gallery cast into the block or cylinder head. However, what I said was correct:- Thermostats, of themselves, DO stop the flow, below their set temperature and then (some) vary it above that or just open fully. Where the water goes instead or if it just pushes against a head depends upon the design of the block and cylinder head.
