Hello, I'm taking off to the French canals next month and reading up on the quality of water, I would like to install a strainer for the raw water...so my question is do I install as a normal filter inline (its an L type flow but circular in shape) and I guess it gets installed before any engine components right (ie before the pump)?

If purchasing the Vetus raw water filter make sure you know the size of the raw water hoses before you order, the three sizes listed are for type 330, 3/4";1"; and 1 1/4".
Force 4 chandlery price is £85.95; they are 120ltr/min;210 ltr/min; and 330ltr/min capacities respectively, depending upon engine flow requirements.

There is another alternative plastic filter(150/ltrs/min @ £24.95) which has spigots covering 3/4";1"; and 1 1/2" hoses. Mount them as mentioned and add a little vaseline to the threads of the caps to make them easy to check and empty regularly; I do mine every trip and the filter is very efficient, and removable to clear.

Both types are shown on page 62 of their 2012 catalogue.

Best position is immediately above the seacock if it is the straight through ball valve type as you can clear any weed etc on the inlet with a rod. The Vetus catalogue will show you the location - between the inlet and the water pump. You need to be sure that your water pump will self prime as it needs to lift the water up to the strainer above the waterline.
