I want to install a starter button on the upper helming position. At the moment when we go through locks you have to go inside the wheelhouse to restart the engine. The ignition will already on so just need a button to turn the engine over.
The starter is difficult to access so I am thinking of wiring it into the the start switch in the wheelhouse. Is this a viable idea ? if so what gauge wire would I use ?

The distance between the two switches would be about 5m and the engine is a 60hp diesel.

This is fine.

If you already have a starter button then wire in paralell.

If you don't have one ( ie a key) then just use a multimeter to determine which contact operate the starter and wire in paralell.

It is probably a good idea to wire a remote stop switch as well.

The only minor caution would be to make sure your engine has in gear start protection, as if not starting from a remote position might lead to more stress in a lock then you had in mind.

The current will be neglible as all you are doing is triggering a relay so gague not really significant. Just match what is there already.
